It's not on any decent new system. Live is loop based primarily, you can expand or not. It doesn't make any major difference at the end of the day in most cases. I think it's about what works best for the individual so everyone uses it in a different way. It's so simple to select what you need and just "ctrl+d".
As for Live's looks, it was never designed to be a sequencer at first. It was designed for Live use so the minimal look is quite appropriate.
I just wish they would give us proper multi screen support already and modular windows
