i managed to pay for part of my education with freelance design work and regular deejaying, but the truth is my program left me with next to no time at all for it. 2 all nighters a week was common, and it was typical to be in studio til 2-3 am every night. a lot of the other students sought jobs in the labs and shops - CAD, metal, wood, laser, mill - so that they could actually use their position to get a leg up on studio work.
