Why has psy-trance never really moved past the whole amateur, home-made kind of feeling? Like for example anything graphic, design-related, when it comes to psy-trance, I find it particularly bad. Like flyers for example. They still look like they were made in 1996. Any why are the DJs always so random? And why are there always like 100 DJs per night? It's like the EDM world has never embraced psy-trance as an official "scene" or whatnot and it was born and always will exist on the fringe of the dance music world.

I don't know, I see some really intricate and well-made psy flyers. It seems to be a trend around these parts for psy flyers to boast extremely detailed hand-drawn fantasy artwork of twisted forests populated by goblins and stuff.

Really, psy-trance is "underground" in the true sense - it's a scene unconcerned about making money and about changing itself in order to make money. Aside from a couple of big names, it is an amateur, local, homegrown thing that has spread all over the world and crops up in the weirdest places. No glitz, no glamour, no interest in what any outsiders think. That is both its greatest strength and its biggest weakness.

John 00 seems to do a great job getting people into psytrance... what I wonder is this: how far do they go? Making the leap to Astrix isn't hard. How about Parvati?

I find locally there are a lot of people who simply aren't making the move to darkpsy. It seems to be more of a experienced music collector and listener sortof thing. For instance the darkpsy stages at two stage (full on/darkpsy) events seem to have a lot more males here rather than 50/50. I'm not sure in detail on that subject really; maybe just see who turns up to events depending on what music style is playing and ask them?

I find the colours present on flyers and ideas way better than the bog standard obvious colours and design house music style art present on house music flyers. Different art styles different tastes? Any flyers you have in mind in particular? Or maybe it'd be easier to compare album covers?

What's wrong with it being just a quite different culture? Certainly there's a lot more people in the psy scene that came from rock/metal backgrounds, rather than just going pop>poppy house>trance>techno after getting bored of trance. It's just going to have a different culture that's all. I like that there's variety in different scenes.

To be honest, the psy trance scene has probably stayed the closest to its roots of all the genres. whatever "rave culture" that once existed is still found in the psy scene. I like that aspect of it. the parties are never about the dj or even the music as much as the people who are there. that being said, the hippies really kill it for me. if only we could get rid of the hippies i would only attend psy parties.

To answer your questions, I think you have to understand that the psychedelic scene is based a lot on the lifestyle aspect more than say the conventional EDM genre which is soley based on the music. What I mean by that is in the conventional clubbing world, it's very much music based when a club advertises the night. In the psychedelic world, gatherings are made up by collectives who are comprised of artists, designers, musicians and other creative minds. When these gatherings happen, music plays a big part in the spectacle but there is also paintings, yoga sessions and other aspects of these collectives which bring out the entire community. Look at Alex Gray (Painter/Philosopher) for example. This guy has never played an instrument or DJed in his life yet he tours to as many music festival as any other major act.

On the DJ quantity question. Most international headliners in the psy scene perform live PA's. Even if its not advertised that way, its highly possible that any psy party you go to on earth will have 1-3 live PA's. Due to the fact that most live PA's are no longer than 2 hours, they tend have to fill the remaining time in with DJ's. Another reason is that as I said in the first paragraph, the events thrown are organized by collectives. In these collectives, the DJ's/Performers tend to vary in style. For example here in Toronto, the main collective has 1 Techno DJ, 1 Zenonesque (Minimal, Techtrance) DJ and 1 Forest/Dark psy DJ. A lot of the events try to cater to everyone's taste so that may explain why it seems quite crowded on the flyers.

I can't really get into the whole artwork/amateur production discussion. I trust that you've seen enough to come to that conclusion.
