My roommates sister was in a very bad car accident today and I can't seem to stop thinking about it.

Not only am I sincerely concerned about her sisters well-being (her sister is one of the most wonderful and pleasant people I've ever met), but beyond that, the look of pure helplessness and anxiety that came across my roommates face when she found out all the details of her sisters injuries was utterly heartbreaking.

I don't even know the details of how the accident happened, but feel compelled to remind all of you (and myself) not to act like idiots in your cars.

I know I've taken unnecessary chances, and I hate to think that one of them would have made any of my family, friends, or loved ones feel the way my roommate felt tonight.

Driving is really fucking dangerous. I'm surprised we dont have to wear helmets when dribving on highways.

yeah. i really need to buy a bike helmet sometime, too. no car here, but i've had some close calls biking in traffic.

over here people are being taught to drive so aggressively. Not waiting at junctions or roundabouts, it's no longer about what you're doing but about what everyone else is too. People not using signals (or using them then going straight on which is fucking stupid) and just basic driving, pushing when passing parked cars etc. I really hate cars & motoring. I fear for my poor gran everytime she goes out, because her reactions aren't the same as they once were, and while she's totally competent, there's always going to be some dick who sees an old lady in her car & takes liberties that do something to her. I'd go on a murderous rampage if it happened.

She sustained a massive head injury and they induced coma to try and stop/slow the bleeding occurring in her brain.

I do not want to be a pessimist though, she is after all a very tough kid from an even tougher family, so if there's any group of people that can pull through it, it'd be them.

One of the upsides of living in a non-developed area is the lack of traffic. I think traffic itself creates maniac-drivers.

mate there's not a lot we can say that will help, and as hard as it sounds on this girl, your priorities must be her sister, keeping her going, especially if it's a long recovery etc. It'll be fucking hard and thankless but it'll mean so much to her if you do.

I know you're not keen on happening, but what happened if you know, eg, was her car hit, was she wearing a seatbelt, someone else at fault etc? If you don't wanna say or don't know, then don't worry mate

In all actuality, I really don't know any of the details of the accident. Essentially, my roommate found out, I took off to go pick up our other roommate (who is also her boyfriend) who was on a kayak in the middle of nowhere, picked him up, brought him and his kayak back, and they got in the car to drive back to her hometown (where her sister is in the hospital).

ok. then you've done all you can for now mate. it'll feel shit knowing they're in that situation but in the end, dealing with incidents is what builds us as people

Well I just got a call from Drew (my good friend/roommate) letting me know that although she isn't awake, she's stabilized for the time being.

We didn't know precisely what that implied, but it sounds like decent enough news, and we'll take what we can get at this point.
