by the way, how do you feel judging a set with like ian van dahl and dj sammy and mashups of everything in between? |
A mix set is an interpretation of the music as [b]YOU[/] see it, that's why except for the trainwrecks we would mix the same style music using different tracks and mix points.
My take is that if you want to inject something into the mix then go for it, just remember the name of the comp. is Tranceaddict MP3 DJ Mix, so we are kind of expecting Progresive Trance / Trance / Hard Trance and if you drop a killer pure Hip Hop set, your comp. score will probably reflect that. However if you can successfully pull off dropping some Hip Hop into a great progressive or trance track you are likely to score well.
I've seen mention here that we as judges should be more focued on ensuring that true Trance only is acceptable. I'm definitely not of that mindset, If you can successfully take trance and fuse new style elements into it, then you have taken the music in a new direction or to a new level. Remember we never would have gotten trance in the first place if people were not pushing musical boundaries ALL the time. Stop and think about your all time, TOP 5 killer mixes you have heard, Now think about why they are killer, its likely because some new element was subtbly delivered that you can't quite put your finger on but its there none-the-less. Think AVB's essential Mix, Sasha and Digweeds Delta Heavy mix, PvD's Berlin love Parade mix o year or two back?
