I think one of the main problems in getting proper trance (ie uplifting/melodic) away in Sydney is that every promoter here advertises their night as Trance and Hard Dance...Progress, Sublime etc advertise trance, but play nothing of the sort unless it's german hard trance.
They are both two very different sounds. One driving, aggressive..the other floaty, softer and more emotive. I love uplifting stuff, but can't stand the hard shit.
I think trance fans get put off by the big nights in Sydney.
To me...it's just not trance at all.
There are some great ideas amongst this post and some even greater intentions. There are only a small crew of us here in Syd passionate about the scene to the point of wanting to make a difference.
Perhaps we all need to unite together to promote a bigger night here...I spend 80% of my weekends either interstate or in NZ. Would sure be nice to have a gig or two on the back doorstep.

as for Sublime, is it just me or does everyone look bored shitless, head to the ground.
The best atmos I have seen in there has been for PVD and AVB.In fact after AVB, everyone just went home.
If only the promoters could see past the "old guard" and let some uplifting trance into that main room at Home...the bloody roof might come off.
I've submitted many CD's, all the time being told my music is too soft...then they put AVB in there. Looks like they only care about the music when an international is in town

Wayman - as much as I would like to be able to fill Sydney venues by myself, it just ain't gonna happen. I just haven't had enough exposure here. The #5 thing was nice and all but realistically most of those votes came from ex-pat NZers here, people in NZ and from voters in Melbourne and Brisbane where I have played my biggest gigs.
In saying that it does count for something and it IS a marketing tool. I'm always keen to help anyone out who is promoting in Sydney and alway play for a reasonable price. Timing is a key factor in this whole promoting game tho and too many times I have played club gigs the weekend of two tribes, the weekend of transmission, the weekend of paul oakenfold, the weekend of "insert international here".
Sydney promoters keen to push trance really need to look ahead two-three months before they plan these things. Halcyon crowds used to be halved at exam time for instance.
Liquid M are really coming up in the scene now, Diggs and Morro are getting some big gig support action. Cameron played a stonking set after me at Icebox the other week (from the 40 mins I heard). We have the talent here and we are starting to build the names. I think if we can all get together on one bill at a reasonably sized venue, with at least 6 weeks advance promotion (not 2 weeks like Atlantis), then this shit can work here in Sydney.
5 million peeps and not one weekly trance night. It's shameful really.
I don't know what the exact answer is but I'm always happy to help out whenever I can.

Thanks for the reply! I was hoping you had a magical piece of the puzzle, that would bring Sydney Trance to life.

Amen and Respect.
Is there anyway you can get those ex-pat's out of their homes, and into clubs???? I'm sure they could fill a club by themselves. lol
EDIT: Diggs and Morro, Liquid M and Cam are developing names to those who know them, IE the Halcyon crowd, the ITMrs, the TA, the TT's, the T.nu's......which is great, as they all deserve their reputations, and no-one on here disputes that. It's those who don't know them who ibelieve we should be trying to market. D&M and Liquid M have played 3 transmissions now, and I haven't seen any (ok, there'd be a few) new faces to their sets since their gigs there. People aren't coming to see them, like they'd go out to see their *insert fav DJ*, but not D&M and LM. It's only those in the know (see above) who go out of their way to see, what I call, talent.
Looks like we all just keep on plugging away trying bit by bit, bummer.

I totally agree...
promotion and amrketing need to be looked at more.... people say "oh 3d world is to expensive..." but if u put the money into it you will get it back.
for instance HOME has a full page ad every week... if we did an event and ran a full page spread or even a double page (like the transmission etc) for at least 6 weeks in a row (pricey i know) i think we can get a substantial crowd.....
its def promotion!! for instance.... progress is JAMMEd everyweek! but the few occasions where pulser and GTR were playing, trance... not banging hard trance... they still had the venue packed... and people loved it.... you just gotta promote this shit!! for weeks in advance... 3Dworld, hire poll postering companies ( we did it for a nova gig) and hire people to flyer!!....... a reasonable venue also that we are sure we could fill..
i dunno.. thoughts?
Sample Gee
Diggs & Morro
Liquid M
Cameron O'Shea
Muli
etc... etc...

It IS expensive. full colour page ad = $1000 a week. People to flier = $20 an hour, there 2 people who do it per venue, and you'd want to cover @ least 2 venues for 2 hours a night, for 2 nights a week.
Costs THERE alone, say over 4 weeks is, $5280, then you have got venue hire with secuirty and staff wages, DJ pay etc etc...you're looking at well over $6000 for a 1 night event. If it's $6000, you're going to need at least 400 people @ $15 a ticket, to break even, with NO other costs or external factors involved......that sort of money just doesn't appear, and that's where I think the issue is. Who's got 6k they're willing to invest to get nothing @ all back for it, other then risk.
