Let me ask you this. I agree that Avenue is a very unique sound. What would you call it, if not trance?

exactly, so having opinions on music which are based on what magazines like this have been pushing seems strange. They are not credible authorities on music.

Will you lot stop blabbering??? Who gives a fuck if its not strictly 'trance'. Trance as a genre is blurred with prog, techno and many other forms of IDM so trying to define 'trance' is a waste of time IMO. So get back on track to the title of this thread.

I have no idea, I try to never call things by genres - because everyone has their own take on what certain genre definitions mean (as we have seen) so saying its 'xxx' might mean one thing to someone and something totally different to the next guy.

I think genre application is just a lazy way of describing tracks. I think it would be more useful for everyone to actually try and describe the individual music rather than lumping things together.

I agree with you completely, but I also think it's a fun intellectual debate. I enjoy breaking down genres, but I also realize that everyone will have a different opinion. It's like mental masturbation, but kind of fun.

In and around 1991.

But that wasnt what it was getting called at the time, and its not stereotypical of the 'trance' sound.

Just because it was underground doesn't mean it wasn't being called trance.

who was actually calling things trance then? not many. The word trance has been applied to music from that time though, there is a difference.

I dont understand that other thing youve said. It doesnt seem to make much sense in the context of this debate

I believe that Mark Reeder coined the word "trance" to define a genre in 1991 with his label MFS which was probably the first trance label also.

Hey, I think trance music originated in the Indian region of Goa, and I believe it was around 1990. I know that Astral Projection were first called SFX and they began creating music in the late 80s. Astral Projection was created in 1994, and as long as I know they are making Trance music from their beginning. So Trance music exists for at least ten years already, although I believe that the sounds they made as SFX were pretty much like Trance music sounds. Yeah, definitely... But hey, maybe I'm wrong...

Imagine darkness so intense and so complete covering you like a velvet blanket. A blackness that cuts you off from the everyday world, forcing you to draw deep into yourself, a blackness that makes you see with your heart instead of your eyes. You can't see, but your eyes seem open. You are isolated, but you know you are united with all living things. And out of darkness comes the roaring of the drums, the sound of the prayers. And among these sounds your ears catch the voices of the spirits, ghostlike, whispering to you from unseen lips. You feel the wings of birds brushing your face; feel the light touch of a feather on your skin. And always you hear the throbbing drums filling the empty space inside yourself, making you forget things that clutter your mind, making your body sway to their rhythm...
