Two words: Insecurity and environment

Insecurity: You fear what you don't understand usualy and when you're a straight male you likely don't understand why gay people are gay. Maybe you worry that they will "rub off" on you or something along those lines. The whole "what if they hit on me" thing is an excuse for insecurity, for if you were a secure male you would politely shrug it off.

Environment: These days there's hate everywhere and whether you like it or not it's going to affect you. People hate people of other races, religions, sexual preference, hell they've even narrowed it down to clothing preference in some cases. It's mostly about how people are brought up, by family members, friends, school, etc. Hear your parents talk about how much they hate gay people or are against it and you likely will be to. Hear your friends making fun of a kid for looking "gay" and you likely will be affected and do the same type of thing.
