Honestly, I'm not much of a gamer. I bought the FX 5500 because my old video card's processor fan decided to stop working, frying it. The 5500 was at the price point of good affordability and features.

WIN2K Pro has got to be the most solid version of Windows that I have used. Server 2K3 is supposed to be more stable than that but since it uses the XP kernel I doubt it.

How on earth did someone manage to keep an NT 4.0 installation going for 4 years?!

I'm really not a gamer, either. I recently built a new computer and wasn't satisfied with the quality of it's onboard video, so I decided I should make use of the motherboard's unused PCI-E x16 slot.

I didn't want to spend $300+ for a good card, so I found a 6800 for under $200. I consider it to be towards the lower end of the enthusiast/gaming spectrum (for newer cards, that is), but it's still good enough so that I probably won't have to upgrade it for at least a few more years.

It's the luck of the draw. With so many millions that are/were running NT 4.0, there just had to be a few that would defy the odds.

Has anyone any definitive specifications for Windows Vista?

I can see a lot of people trashing their old P2s and P3s because of the newer specs.

I don't see spending $200+ on software that is always going to be in a state of perpetual repair anyway.

@ NeoPhono: Which version of Fedora (kernel) did you install? I'm about to get rid of Mandrake so I can use that instead. I downloaded it (Fedora) a month or two ago from some torrent site (the DVD ISO). I guess that'll work with the instructions you posted earlier?

I'm currently using Fedora Core 4 with the 2.6.12-1_1447 kernel. I might go with a higher version kernel in a few months, but I don't feel like switching all my drivers over at the moment and I haven't found any real advantages to updating yet.

The installation instructions should work with any kernel of FC4, although you can always download the latest version of Fedora, as it's the free version of Red Hat. Or, just update to the latest kernel version using yum or RHN before you start installing drivers, etc. (Immediately post-installation)

Good luck, tell us how it goes.

Hello! finally

@NeoPhono: Woohoo! I never knew that it was so easy to fix my master boot record and get rid of Mandrake. All I did was boot Mandrake and type "lilo -U /dev/hda" and then formatted my Linux partition. I re-installed Fedora on it. So far I haven't really set it up, but the link you provided is great. It's such a simple and painless process cuz they pretty much tell you exactly what to do . The only thing I've done so far though is install the nVidia drivers and gotton rid of the default display driver. Oh and my soundcard works just fine in Fedora and sounds great!!! Ok, I'm getting a little too excited but I still have to figure out how to be able access my NTFS drives as a normal user. But thanks alot for the link NeoPhono.

OK, now that I'm using Fedora, I suppose you guys (Trancaholic and NeoPhono) could help me easily. I'm still having trouble getting xmms to work. The tiny logo pops up but then it gets stuck there. I tried:

yum -y install xmms
yum -y install xmms-mp3
yum -y install xmms-skins

any ideas?

Oh and one more thing, how to I get set my thumb mouse button to crtl?

EDIT: Nevermind, I got xmms working now. It's wierd though, I can't use the standard command to run it and instead have to use a shortcut in the "start bar."
