If you can't think of a way to control your kids without resorting to violence, you probably shouldn't be having kids in the first place. Smacking a kid isn't going to help that kid grow up to become a functional member of society, it will take years of actual committed "parenting" (hah, fancy that!) to acheive this result. Smacking a kid doesn't teach the kid anything about why what he did was "wrong", it just teaches him to be more careful about getting caught the next time. I was "smacked" a few times as a kid (just an open palm on the behind - nothing as brutal as some of the stuff posted in this thread) and it didn't do really acheive anything, save for making me resent my parents for a few hours. My parents could always get through to me much more effectively with a simple "what you did was wrong, we're very disappointed in you" and an explanation of why what I did was wrong, rather than just belting me every time I raised their ire, for reasons that I couldn't possibly understand.
Ultimately, if you hit your kid, all you're teaching that kid that violence is the best way to assert one's authority and to solve one's problems:

well judging by this very insightful post, you seem to have a really good head on your shoulders...so obviously belting you on the ass when u were little wasn't so bad after all huh! lol
no but seriously, my mom used to wack me on the ass pretty damn good when i was little...and i was a monster! i used to thrash around in the grocery store and throw all the cans of food on the ground if i didn't get my way. hahah i'm surprised my mom didn't kill me.
she also hit me a lot when i was older which i don't really agree with, but oh well. i had an asshole manipulative pain killer addicted stepdad who abused my mom so i think a lot of her hitting me was her frustration from him. i mean literally if i mouthed off to my mom she would just pop me one right in the face. i got used to it after a while and i even started fighting back. i mean not like really hurting her or anything, but i threw her on the couch one time after she hit me and she finally stopped after she realized i wasn't going to take it any more. she's like a totally different person now. she was just a maniac back then because of my stepdad. he was an asshole.
as far as me and my kids (if i have any), i probably won't hit them. i'm pretty stern with kids and i'll probably be the type of mom who just has to give my kid "the look" and they will fear me. hahah it runs in my family.
