I thought ID contests are about showing your knowledge of music by IDing tracks you already know... But oh well.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't think people participate in that way, I just think that participating in that way would be the most fair and honest way to do it. =)

True, everybody locked in a controlled environment would be the most fair way.

But I feel that the contest's are a way of getting to think about the music, try to find out whose style it is and explore their productions until you find the correct answer.

What fun is it just to ramble up a list of stuff you know?

Granted, the googlable ones are quite lame...

In that case the ID contest should have a more defined goal... Winner should be either the one who IDs the biggest number of tracks by already knowing them or the one who IDs the biggest number of tracks by haunting them down thanks to, for example, googling lyrics or recognizing certain artist's style.

I downloaded one about a year ago, but found myself only knowing like 2... which kind of put me off it. I'm afraid I'm a bit too much of a newb.

and what's to stop you from claiming you identified exclusively tracks you already knew or the opposite?

how about this instead: try to find out whose style it is, which label that they released on does it fit the most, and take a random guess at which track it might be?

under a different set of rules knowing the label something was originally released on could be worth some points, maybe half a point for guessing the release it's on too.

downloading the entire catalog of a particular artist on the other hand is disgraceful in a contest that is directly relavant to honour and skill (unless this is a skill particularily sought in a contest, which should be specifically mentioned in it's disclaimer in that case).

Ahh, I knew I forgot to mention something in my post... Yes, that's right, there's no way to prove someone's cheating. But that way it's pointless to host ID contests one way or another so I suppose it should stay as it is. I'm having fun participating no matter I know for a fact that I won't win, but who cares? It's all about fun, isn't it?
