You really think that Gucci costs what it cost because of the wages of its employees, no. It is an upscale product, and therefore cost what it costs. |
and those prices definately allow for the higher salary to be paid. If that store were a normal retail outlet there is no way they would be able to pay those wages. Again, at least in this case, people have a choice whether or not to support those prices. In the case of bus and garbage, people have no choice.
| quote: | Garbage: Horrible job. Requires no education. You want to pay them less and less, because you think that they are paid too much.
1) What exactly would you pay them and why?
2) based upon what criterion? |
Agreed it is an awful job. So are many unskilled low paying jobs. What would I pay them? whatever the going rate is. Based upon what criterion? Skill required, education required, and availablity of workers.
| quote: |
Ultimatley no one would ever choose to do that job, because you are collecting other peoples trash for a living, and hanging out of the back end of a truck with the smell of garbage and all of the harmful bacteria blowing in your face. You would pay these people the same as telemarketers, retail workers and bouncers. |
youd be surprised what people would do for what wage.
What you fail to realize is that $20 an hour for garbage men and $25 for bus drivers are ARTIFICIAL SALARIES. They are not determined by market forces. They are over-inflated due to the stranglehold that the unions have over the monopolies that provide these services. Its tantamount to legal blackmail everytime they strike. They are way overpaid for the work they provide, the education they have, and the amount of skill required. Yes it may suck to haul trash, but please dont tell me that it requires much skill or education.
| quote: | | Thank you, but I disagree for two reasons, 1) I value their existence, the work they do and because they are humans deserving of pay relative to the job they are doing. | Thats all im asking, to give them relative pay as determined by MARKET forces.
| quote: | | and 2) because it is a garbage job, it is dangerous and prone to pain. You speak of injury as a burden to the system, I speak of injury as a burden to a human, their livelehood, family and ones overall drive to be a productive member of society. |
Well if injury is that important to the person, they shouldnt be doing that job REGARDLESS of pay according to what you just wrote.
| quote: | | #2 is clearly the fundamental differance between our opinions. |
#2 is actually you contradicting yourself
| quote: | | Ultimatley their rate of pay must be respectful of the realities of the job, and should therefor pay accordingly. | Agreed... so lets end unionization, allow for competition, and let the free market decide the wages
