I feel the communities of which terrorists belong to, no matter what religion or cause they are for, must weed out the extremists from their organizations. No one in their communities are willing to speak out against them, they are scared of them too. But they have to be taken out at the root.

Don't blame governments here, if the extremists didn't act like they do, they wouldn't be so hard on all of us. As a Canadian I support my country, and love living here, and as a Canadian (I spell it with a capital C like everyone should, btw) I choose to support my government over extremists.

What transpired today in Ontario proves just the opposite.

Events like today clearly show the type of influence that rogue governments and foreign terrorist organizations have on our domestic safety.

If anything - domestic terrorist cells (ones based on the ideals and beliefs of rogue governments and foreign terrorists) boost support for foreign action on the "war on terror" and show just how necessary it is for Canada and other countries to fight to defend our interests and our safety abroad.

The "big picture" is such that we are not safe until the people who lead, train and enable terrorists are caught, prosecuted and locked-up (and if a big part of that mission is instilling democracy in foreign lands [so that the people can do that job themselves], then so be it).

You cover a lot of issues that are still in the grey area for me. I truly believe that we should tread carefully in these times. Desperate/sweeping measures may become our transition into a xenophobic society.

There must be measures in place to prevent terrorism from happening, and today we have seen that our government capable of doing so. I don't think anyone will disagree with that. Whether or not we must put more measures into place is debatable. It will be a slippery slope we go down when we pass terrorism legislation. Suddenly throwing rocks in protest at say Queen's Park could be considered an act of terrorism. I think you should be arrested if you start throwing rocks in a protest, but when a judge is feeling particularly punishing, or there is media hype, s/he might use terrorism laws.

Foreign action becomes even more questionable with that being said. You are now imposing your power on them. As we have seen, such diplomatic policies end up backfiring. Can we now say that we are allowed to exercise our interests in someone else's backyard? Iraq is an excellent example. The country itself posed absolutely no direct threat to the United States of America nor its territories. State-sponsored terrorism? That's still up for debate. But Vx rockets were not going to be flying over the atlantic.

Many early Roman conquests were dubbed as defensive expansion. They were afraid that their neighbours would invade, so they invaded first. Does that make sense? I don't know.

I see a lot of extremism in this thread. On one hand, some believe we should have a much tighter immigration policy (We rely heavily on immigrant skills to run this country) and on the other hand I hear that certain groups are being unfairly targetted (Though we have seen that the terrorists continually emerge from these groups) and implying that we're bordering on xenophobia. I guess I stand somewhere in between.

I just wanted to throw my thoughts out there and see if anyone had any input on it.

Are you suggesting that Harper initiated the investigation when he was merely Leader of the Opposition?

I think YOU & HARPER were in on with the "terrorists".

Our customs is less a customs and more of a tax collector.

I don't agree with that actually. I have the hardest time at customs every time i come back to Canada from Belgium (or wherever i was at). I get asked 2 million questions, when was i last here, why i left, what am i doing here, who am i living with, what does my boyfriend do, where does he work, etc etc.

I always have this huge fear they won't let me in, they're so damn tough to get by. Really scary.

fertilizer does not make you a terrorist.

Just because i may have 5 handguns and 15 rifles at home does not make me a mass murderer.

I want proof of this "intent to carry out ""terrorist"" acts"

you guys are worried? I'm even more worried! There's sooooooooooooo many taliban types muslims in Montreal, the secret services should hurry up on getting them before its too late. In the 90's some terrorists operation were planned here before being carried out in Alegeria by the GIA.

I'm really affraid that some cells would hurry their operations fearing they might be caught soon

loca: i have never had any trouble with the customs over here. In th US its the exact opposite, being held for an hour, questionned over and over, its understandable to some extent.

The US is even worse lol. I went across the border at Niagara Falls last year and they fingerprinted me and took my picture!! Hahaha it took over 30 mins for them to let me through! And i'm from freakin Belgium! What's my tiny little country gonna do? Bah. Needless to say I'm avoiding the US like the plague now.

What I find inconsistent however is that neither of you have fully, and harshly condemned the atrocious activities of the suspected Ontario terrorists (without some sort of "but... The West (Canada) is overstepping it's bounds... etc." type of disclaimer or some other rationalization).

I applaud Malek, since he makes his position on this specific issue very clear (whereas your position is somewhat clouded with "exceptions"/"disclaimers").

Does that mean you also support our Charter over extremists? No one in this entire thread said anything against the arrests yesterday. We were all responding to Malek's cry to limit multiculturalism.

I commend your defense of justice here, simms, but I have faith that the police and government will act on air tight evidence within Canada because of all the scrutiny they will face from the public eye. Although I don't trust the media 100%, a large-scale operation like this on our own soil HAS to have pretty solid evidence because of all the variables the government/police has access to here. They can monitor anything that goes on here with respect to those arrested and they can go back as far as when those arrested entered/were born in the country, so I trust they took the necessary action.

Malek, in all seriousness, if you want to do your paranoia AND this country a favour, next time you see these "taliban types" (btw, what's a "taliban type"? Someone with a long beard and a white turban?) why don't you strike up a conversation with them? You're a confident guy, and honestly, I'd defend you like my brother if any shit got stirred up--I'll back you up with my Saudi connections! Seriously, TALK to them...don't fear them! Be friendly. If they ignore you and treat you like shit, then yeah, you've got a point, but most of the time these are kids who are just as open-minded, friendly, and intelligent as you and I. Don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch!
I volunteer every Friday night for a youth mentorship program at a mosque near my house in Scarborough (since university) and I know several Afghani kids (15-23) who wear the white thobe and turban to their PUBLIC school everyday and have long beards. They are among the most intelligent and peaceful youth I know. I'd vouch for their character in a second; I watched them grow up over the past 8 years.
