1) To base a sport on whether or not it's a 'MAN's SPORT' by the level of violence or aggression in it, then you have truly been completely and utterly raped in the ass with the American way of thinking.

- This has been one of the major topics of discussion surrounding Hockey as you're aware. Baseball, there's rarely any contact between players, football ---they wear equipment and is a full contact sport - unlike soccer/futbol. It's the major difference between European based sports and aggressive American sports.

2) I know u just did not say they don't dive in other sports???? you've got to be shitting me~! Isn't that a major complain in hockey? what about basketball? have you ever watched a game? they all over do fouls...because it'll get them to the line. The only 2 sports you won't see it too much is Baseball & Football.. that's because (as mentioned before) Baseball - there's not that much contact between opposing teams, and Football is a full contact sport where they're fully padded and expect to get hit and hit others.

If you have ever played a sport where little to no equipment is used such as Tennis, Soccer, Basketball, etc... then you would know first hand...that landing on the floor/ground or being directly hit by another player hurts 100x more because you're either running at full speed, jumping, or whatever else and to then be hit is like running into a wall. You can't compare it to sports where you use full body equipment like hockey or football.

U.S. is out because Austria just finished them this afternoon!

oh well, at least they played a lot more valiantly than Canada did..

Sad to see dignified U.S. go out
July 15, 2007
Cathal Kelly

It's an unfamiliar feeling for a Canadian watching the U.S. get knocked out from a major international tournament – sadness.

The neighbour we all not-so-secretly love to hate is just plain likable when it takes the soccer pitch.

Their skill is part of it. American teams always play aggressive, attractive soccer. But it's their attitude that sets them apart. In a game full of whiners, divers and handbag swingers, American soccer players carry themselves with a little more dignity than their opponents.

They lost to Austria yesterday, 2-1 in extra time. It was a wet, sloppy affair played in a steady downpour. The sodden ball skidded away from the players and goalkeepers, soft passes rocketing off into touch time and again. Reduced to 10 men in extra time, the Americans could not hold back the Austrian tide.

Super-sub Erwin Hoffer – the name `Jimmy' shaved into the side of his head – knocked in the winning goal in the 105th minute.

Austria moves forward to play the Czech Republic, which beat Spain on penalty kicks last night after a 1-1 tie. The Austrians deserved their win, but that can't stop us from missing the U.S.

"We won fans over with our technical ability, our attacking football," U.S. coach Thomas Rongen said after the match.

Of course, that was part of it. But it was the heart on display that was notable. Take U.S. keeper Chris Seitz.

Playing with a thigh injury so serious it prevented him from taking his own goal kicks, Seitz was a tower of strength. In the first half, he saved a shot point-blank with his chin and never flinched. In the second half, two crucial saves left him reeling, eyes rolling. Even though he probably should have, he refused to come off.

By the end, he could barely walk. He staggered around chasing loose balls, kicking them feebly up to his frantic teammates. Watching Seitz's performance, it was impossible not to feel some cross-continental fealty. From a purely sporting perspective, Mexico or Argentina are a greater pleasure to watch. But they retain the annoying habits that plague this game – going down too easily and for too long, begging for calls and berating referees.

There's been worse in this tournament, embarrassing scenes where some players have looked more like children than young men. Take the head-shaking chaos in the Chile-Portugal playoff encounter, including the too-stupid-to-be-believed snatching of a red card from the referee's hand.

The U.S. encountered a little of that spite after defeating Uruguay in a gutsy, come-from-behind fashion four days ago. After the match, the South Americans tried to square up with their opponents, a small mob chasing the Americans around the pitch. The Americans refused to bite. They separated from the squabbling and went over to clap their supporters. The Uruguayans went back to their dressing room, punching a volunteer along the way.

"I was over shaking the referee's hand and I just saw this big ... thing going on," U.S. star Freddy Adu said of his role in the aborted brawl. "Then I went over and tried to keep my guys away from it."

The tiny midfielder was wide eyed at the idea of it. Fighting? In soccer?! All Adu could do was laugh.

Yesterday, Adu crumpled to the pitch after the loss. He lay there, disconsolate, until Rongen walked by. The Dutch-born American coach pulled his captain up, but didn't stop to console him or make a show of it. Obviously, in Holland there's no crying in soccer.

Adu and his team leave Canada with their reputations burnished. They may not have any silverware to show for their work, but they have won the grudging admiration of their hosts.

ok regarding the mans sport thing... yeah i agree that probably isnt the bext way of looking at things but you know what i mean....

and about diving.... there isnt a big problem in hockey with diving... i played hockey since i was young and never have i seen someone dive.... like i am not saying that no one has dived in the history of hockey but it is not as close to as big of a problem as it is in soccer.... like year there probably have been instances where people have dived in the nhl (like pretend to be triped cuz thats basically the only thing you can fake) but it is very uncommon... at least in north america, havent watched much european hockey

and there isnt diving in basketball either, its called "drawing a foul", and its not done by pretending that you've been fouled when you havent been, drawing a foul is doing somehting such as driving to the basket when theres a bunch of defenders there because you know someone will foul you to prevent you from scoring..... they dont just go to the basket and then fall down to pretend that they were pushed....

yeah i know that you can get hurt in other sports too, especially the ones without equipment, i am not saying you have to get hurt for a sport to be 'cool'

the problem with soccer isnt that there is not much contact... the problem is that people are pretending to be fouled when no foul was committed....

i am not here to bash soccer, i am here to bash the people who feel that its alright to pretend to be fouled just to give their team a scoring opportunity.... if they want to get a goal they should earn it the old fashion way, not through trickery

i did not mean to say that america doesnt like contact sports, its just that fact that the players fake getting hit... and that seems to be more important than getting back up, getting back into the play and trying to get an honest goal for your team

^Part of the problem is the consistency in refereeing. Some refs give fouls more easily than others, which encourages players to seek easy calls from refs.

Mind you, reffing a game is incredibly hard, to see whether a foul is legit or not.

Well, it's Argies 1 - Mehico 0.

Entertaining game so far. These kids can play

Argentina 1-0 Mexico

Argies tightened up defence in 2nd half and Mexico had trouble string passes together and shackled Dos Santos tighter than a virgin's arsehole.

the match was a flat out travesty and disgrace to the game .. even worse was the aftermath riot outside

the tournament was going so well here too up until then... not surprised that FIFA hasn't posted anything on their site about it until after the "investigation"..

There is no one to blame but FIFA. They might as well put in the kids who volunteer as refs.

Ole...,ole, ole, Chile,...Chile!

It was fun being there for all the right and wrong reasons.

The Good...

The Chilean fans who took up the whole section by the corner flag were awesome. Did anyone see the second fan who ran on the field wearing flippers? A few flares or firecrackers. Oh ya, there were a couple of world class goals.

The Bad...

People fighting in the stands. Tossing corn, beer and water at the ref. The fans who were throwing back far from the pitch were just raining garbage on their own fans. Argentinian embellishment.
