heh, honestly this is where half the enjoyment comes from when i listen to trance (or make it), be it formulaic or not

the marriage between the elements in a perfectly balanced trance 'groove' (if you can call it that @ 140bpm) is often something that gives me far more of a buzz than whatever melodic shenanigans ensue.. my point, why make it about creativity when technical precision alone can result in a more pleasing outcome?


i'm glad you agree with the post i made in the colontonio thread, but really it's something i can look past. i have a disliking for melodies that sound like cheap rehashes but besides that, i like my trance to be 'efficient' more than anything

haha i would agree completely. believe me i give them very little credit.

if you see in my earlier reply I said "i don't think this is a conscious decision on the producer's part"


i tend to think these things work on a cultural scale


but there are other forms of meta reference than parody - eg wanting to make a "sean tyas kick" or an "oliver lieb bassline"

what bothers me is when others make these references and then write bios about how they were musical prodigies since their mom signed them up for piano lessons and their grandfather played the trombone in church and how their new track is acclaimed in a myspace circle jerk

If it isn't conscious I'd argue it isn't post-modern at all. Meta-references are deliberate and have something to say about the forms and genres they're involved in.

good point, but maybe more valid if I had claimed that an artist was postmodern, whereas I am merely claiming that the genre is in a postmodern stage

i don't like this weird distinction that says when someone is an intellectual they are being postmodern, and when someone isn't they are being unoriginal

maybe i should say "the postmodern climate of contemporary trance music" but that would make me look like even more of a tool
