For a start, let me say I'm in the clear since I never was up Radioslave's bum.

Now that's settled, here's my take on this: I think people love to say what they want in music is originality, but that's not strictly true. What people like in music is certain elements that appeal to them in some way - and they learn over time to add new elements to the "list" of things they like. Similarly, they can also get sick to death of certain elements if they hear them too often.

There are two things that lead people to think originality in music is everything: first, when a track is appealing AND sounds fresh to them in some way, that fact magnifies the experience they get from listening to it. Second, making original music is harder than making formulatic music, therefore the producers who manage to come up with some of it have more merit.

People take these two things and rationalize them to think what they want in music is originality. In reality, they can love just as much an original track as something completely formulatic.

That's what happens with these producers - Radio Slave appeals to a lot of people here, who like looped, techy, dark music. Deadmau5 doesn't, because they're sick to death of that kind of in-your-face happy melodies, and his tracks generate a cheap feeling in their minds (that's my opinion). Most people HAVE liked this kind of music, but haven't gotten sick of the Radio Slave looped kind of thing. *Yet* - although there's a chance they might never get sick of it.

And since they like it, they think - well if I like it, I guess it must be because it's original! So they go search for every little detail in the music that sounds just slightly different to all the other 50 previous releases, and argue in music forums that those details make all the "originality". Not different from how epic trance fans will get all excited, when their fav producer uses a 32-bar melody instead of his usual 16-bar melody. Must be forward thinking!

So to summarize: I agree with RJT's general line of thought, and managed to write a shitload of words for basically nothing.

Rob: the thread has pretty much been answered. maybe it should in fact be closed.

isnt it how it happens IRL ?

haha

in fact, maybe the internets would be a better place if there was an automatic [ANSWERED] function.

Thanks loads for the long post - if anything I think you definitely hit on the similar kind of psychological reaction I was inclined to think drives this kind of thing. It isn't as if it's a small thing either - everyone's gone through it in one way or another.

As fun as this whole little voyage has been, I'm glad to see so much of it is actually somewhat relevant to the discussion, or at least worked toward resolving some misunderstandings. I'm going to leave it open, but if Tony closes it I won't be shocked.

nice to see I'm not the only one who things Radio Slave is boring. His remix of Slam - Azure for example. I've just never found anything of his really that jumps out at me.

EXCEPT the amazing 'Next Stop Chicago'
