I don't know whether Xanax hit on this yet or not - but the vast majority of people who are addicted to opiates do not die of overdoses.

Real overdoses of opiates are generally only found in so-called "n00bs" - as Lilith mentioned, the lifestyle that goes along with most addictions is what winds up killing people, not the drugs themselves. So unless it's a hot shot, you're not really going to find large quantities of opiate addicts dying from overdoses.

exactly. If you are dying from an overdose of opiates you:

1. are an idiot and combined opiates with benzos, alcohol, or some other CNS depressant in excess and have killed yourself. If you are dumb enough to do this you would do it no matter if drugs were legal or not.

2. got street dope that was far stronger than usual or was adulterated with some other substance. This problem goes away if you can buy pure H of a known strength from the government store instead of whatever Leroy from the housing project happens to have today.

3. you have no opiate tolerance and you take an overdose out of sheer ignorance or stupidity. This problem would go away as well when you purchased your H from the government store since it would come with detailed instructions on safe use and dosage just like any prescription does.

If the drugs are legal you eliminate 2 of the 3 major reasons for OD plus all of the lifestyle issues that RJT and Lilith touched on. I've yet to hear any good arguments from anyone as to why drugs should be illegal, and when people bring up the reasons that JBJ listed and I rebut them with this type of logic they always revert back to some 'well drugs are bad so they have to be illegal' irrational argument. The sad thing is that most people I have these discussions with are otherwise intelligent people, but they have been brainwashed by anti-drug propaganda into thinking illogically.

That is because there are none. The logic behind needing to ban them is bullshit to begin with.

Drugs are purposefully criminalized to subjugate the lower classes because it is the lower classes who overwhelming make up the demographic of trade within the narcotics black market. It's about maintaining the power of the aristocracy. When the lower classes are being distracted by drug use, drug trade, incarceration, etc., they lack the motivation to rebel or start revolutions, much like the Black Panther Party, workers, and unions did in the 1960's.

We'll never know for sure until we try. Won't happen in our lifetimes, though. Shit, I'm 31, and I don't think I'll see the decriminalization of marijuana in my life!
