That's my reaction as well. It's an interesting film, but anyone who actually likes it is either a pervert or just messed up in the head.

I can say the same thing about people that like Saving Private Ryan or Braveheart or even the Saw series for that matter, but I wont because it's not a good enough argument.

You've got an argument with Saw, because that movie sucked too. But Irreversible wasn't even good at what it tried to do - the only reason anybody has ever heard of it is because of the brutal rape scene, and hipster kids have themselves convinced that it's somehow "artsy" when in fact, the movie would have sucked forward or backward.

You say it like I actually ENJOYED watching that scene. It was shocking as hell, it wow'd me. I for one like to be wow'd during a movie, regardless of what it is. I saw it as enlighting, I had never seen anything like it.

That's my take on it; i don't know if it was artsy, who am I to say, but it was weird and different and a completely new take on directing. Just leaving the camera on the ground and letting it go for so long, you don't see things like that in movies everyday, plus it looked nothing like something you would see in a porno.

Actually the soundtrack is actually my favorite part of the movie, brilliant work by Bangalter IMO.

Well, I jumped to that conclusion about the rape scene because that's often what I hear people say about the film - that it's artsy because it dares to show a rape.

What I didn't like about the film is that the most interesting scene (the ending) comes in the first two minutes, the set-up is a brutally uncomfortable act of violence in the middle, and then the ending never reveals anything about the beginning of the film that makes watching all of that worthwhile. Memento was similarly constructed, but at least the end of the film (beginning of the story) illuminated something new and interesting about the beginning of the film (end of the story).

Irreversible just struck me as decadent - different for the mere sake of being different - and while it was an interesting film to watch for that reason, I couldn't imagine actually liking it.

edit: To add to why different in this case was not good - it didn't do anything new with the medium really - it just re-hashed the form of Memento by adding shock value. The "different" aspect had nothing to do with carrying the story forward or adding to the cinematic value of the film. I saw it as kind of full of itself to be honest - like a smug emo kid saying "look how unique and non-conformist I am".
