something the Nikita people opted for also.

booking big name talent is not just about saying, "here's a lot of money, play for us." its a relationship that the talent booker has with the agency, how much the artist likes the venue and the crowd it attracts, plus many others.

edit* i loves me some Circus and the staff that works but this is LA. gotta keep up with the times. its the same for Avalon and Vanguard.

DUHHHH... obviously they try harder. that doesn't mean they are necessarily any better or that it's even a difficult feat to accomplish.

lol is that why they are practically bribing people to come to the club the once in a blue moon when their top headliners are in town?

head in the sand, this one.

Seriosuly. Circus is just as good if not better than Avalon or Vanguard for your all-around, peak-time, raving, euphoric nightclub experience. Before January 2009, you might be able to say the club was lacking. But since January 2009, the club has been packed most weekends and the music, talent, people, and atmosphere has been incredible. Did anyone see the lighting that was brought in for Rank 1? Were you there when Matt Darey played? Have you been there when Joseph Mordeno and I have packed the back room until 4am?

It has been a great time since January and I am not just saying that because I play there. I know a lot of people that appreciate Circus and have the time of their lives there.

nor do i fault you for taking this opportunity to cozy up to the hand that cuts your check, but the fact remains that circus has trouble attracting a broad range of a-list djs on a regular basis like its competitors. you can't really pin that fact on anything other than its unwillingness to update the venue to its competitors' standards.

LOL @ Cozy Your statement regarding the update on the venue is fair enough. As a DJ, I take into account the decor and venue to some degree, but I am much more in it for the music and the people's reaction to the music and how everyone is enjoying themselves. Thus, it probably doesn't bother me as much as some people and I appreciate the uniqueness of the venue in relation to other venues.

I was having a drink with a friend the other day and he mentioned the same thing about the update. I understand it is an issue to some. Still, the parties have been going off at Circus this year and I am impressed with its resurgence as one of LA's top electronic music Saturday night weeklys.

i may not have been to circus in years, but even from the standpoint of its physical layout--which i assume is the same--the main room dj booth provides no sense of safety or privacy from a mob attack. i forget who it was, but i remember reading a review of some night there where it took the headliner 15 minutes to get from the booth to the exit after the show because of overzealous fans closing in from every direction. that would be quite annoying to me as a touring dj seeing how orderly and professional exit strategies are at other clubs and festivals. how can circus seriously expect to attract the 'dj mag' titans without a more comfortable dj booth? or one where the dj can gather his traveling entourage within? the answer is they can't because the working space is important to big djs who command big audiences. now as a patron i like how low the booth sits to the ground, but as a dj that degree of intimacy with the faces that populate the front row does nothing to inspire a memorable set. other hollywood megaclubs understand the virtue of having an elevated booth. and with all the square-footage they're working with, why keep the booth in that awkward corner? every large and successful club i can think of fills in from the back, and for a good reason. and how about arranging the main room with some sense of symmetry of space? i guarantee you that would solve much of the acoustic problems in that club. these are just my 2 cents, but my experience with mismanaged clubs is that the powers that be are unwilling to admit to any problems so the venue will continue to suffer that second-rate image until ownership changes hands.

The dj booth has changed. The DJ is up on a stage in the center of the room facing outwards toward the patio.

There are number of videos of the new set up in some previous Circus threads. Here is one video from May 9th, when Rank-1 played:
