I'm waiting for the download to finish, so I'll start with the tracklisting:

Varied to say the least. This is more of what I personally would like to see with these mixes, but I guess it's up to the mixer what they want to do.

Pink Floyd: I haven't heard all of their stuff, but anything from Dark Side of the Moon would be great in my opinion. EDIT: I thought it was Eclipse when I first read the tracklist. I'm always eager to hear more Pink Floyd. Probably my favourite non-electronic act.

BT: I've heard a lot of BT stuff, but not this tune. Looking forward to it. Right now my favourite is Sunblind, but that might just be due to its rarity.

Jean-Michel Jarre: Never heard of him, looking forward to it.

Oasis: Kind of overrated for me. Not the song I would have chosen, but still not a bad song either.

Apollo 440, Crystal Method, Chemical Brothers, Junkie XL: Being from North America, I've only really heard a couple of radio hits from each group. Looking forward to hearing what someone who has listened to them more would consider their best work to be.

Sasha: I have this ep, but I only ever play xpander from it. It will be good to go back and revisit this.

The Prodigy: Again, not my absolute favourite track from them, but one of them. Great groove to it. I have a feeling I know why you would have chosen this track over others.

Hybrid: This is also one of my favourite songs of all time, but I prefer Symphony. It just seems to flow better as a song to me. Also, there is an extra sound in Symphony in the second half that reminds me of a child (I'm sorry, this is the best way I can describe it). It just seems to make the end of the track brighter for me.

I definitely approve the choices in tracks. Now to listen to the set and see how it all goes together... =)


EDIT: Post mix thoughts:

transitions: after hearing the first couple, I realize that the songs you have chosen are just too difficult to mix together to keep any flow, a good effort though. The problem for me is that the first few songs all start off really slowly, so whatever momentum is picked up throughout the song is lost in the next transition. I'm glad you went with variety over easily mixable tracks.

Pink Floyd: Great track that I haven't heard at all. I'm going to need to check out the second half of the song on my own. Damn you! =)

BT: Probably one of the most atmospheric songs I've heard of him that were still listenable. I wasn't a big fan of his Binary Universe Album.

Jean-Michel Jarre: Good atmospheric tune, I can't stand the musical chords being called out though. Sounds kind of, I'm going to say cliche, but this may not be the right term for it.

Oasis: After hearing the first few tracks, I can now see why you would choose this track for the set. The track comes in a little sour for me (key clashing), but is only there for a few seconds.

Apollo 440: I liked the transition into this one. Having the key matched really helped it. Not what I'm used to hearing Apollo 440 play, but prefer it over most of the stuff I have heard from them.

Sasha: Makes me think it could fit early on in the Airdrawndagger album. Good stuff.

Orbital: Finally starting to see some build to the set after the last few tracks. Track sounds quite original to me, but probably not one I would buy.

Yello: Big change in pace here. Pretty good track, don't know what else to say.

Crystal Method: Very Crystal Method sounding. I am liking how all of these tracks each have a unique sound to them, even the ones that may get categorized in similar genres.

Chemical Brothers: This track already seems like it could fit in with Climbatize. We'll see how it fits with Billy Club.

Junkie XL: The beat in this song seems to fit well with Narayan. I think Climbatize will work well also. Not my favourite JXL song, don't really care for it.

The Prodigy: Good mix here. What can I say that already hasn't been said. I love the bassline in this also. I like the fadeout of the JXL song into this, it just seems to add a bit more to the beginning of the track.

Hybrid: I like the sudden cut to introduce this song as a closer. Amazing track! Again, one of my all time favourites.

Overall, some great tracks. I really liked the flow of the second half of the set. In the first half, the tracks just made it too tough to keep any flow in my opinion.

This to me is a good point. I'm sure system-j that you already have a bunch of people in mind to submit mixes, and that they're probably electronic music veterans in general. Because of this, I worry that they may have all moved on from trance and will avoid playing it for the most part. This may be the case with other genres as well.

I'm wondering if you we're planning or could plan to pick people that would more likely fill in genres that aren't getting any attention. Trying to cover more genres between the different mixes might get more people interested in the idea.

For me personally, I'd like to see some trance. I started with older trance and haven't found anything to fill the void when it went out of style. I'd like to see a trance veteran submit something that may turn me on to other tracks I may have missed previously. People like Rebel9 have put out some good stuff that I enjoy, but it only covers one end of the spectrum.

Please don't just view this post as a plea to get more trance in the mixes, but more of a suggestion to get more genres covered over the different mixes. If I happen to get trance on one of them, great, but I will still be happy to see different genres covered in every mix. I tried the first mix and found it just wasn't my cup of tea and that I couldn't get into it. With this second mix, I am familiar with a bunch of the songs and am genuinely interested in seeing how these can all possibly fit together.

If I keep seeing variety in the mixes from month to month, I'll keep coming back. Otherwise I'll get bored and not bother.

I'll end this post by saying that this idea is off to a good start so far and that I appreciate you carrying it through. Thanks for getting it all started.

What you've got to understand is that I have no idea what each participant will play in their mix. The only way I could guarantee you trance would be by deliberately picking someone who I know only really likes trance.

Also, there's a "Trance classics!" set posted in this section every month, if that's what you're looking for. I know many TAs would just bang out some '99 vintage epic trance if I invited them. There will be trance featured here sooner or later, you can bank on it.

I'm going to keep this post short to try to just clarify what I'm trying to say: What I'm trying to say is that I more want to see variety than just what I want specifically, but it's probably unfair to think that you have complete control over this.

However, I'm sure you have an idea of a few people's tendencies around here and I'm hoping that you try to keep some of these people in your back pocket to steer this musical showcase in a different direction if it's getting too stale.

The whole reason why I posted all of this in the first place is because I really like the idea and I want it to flourish. If I can't make realistic suggestions on keeping the idea fresh for most people, I'm sorry. Hopefully I can at least stimulate thought on how it can be achieved, if something needs to ever be done at all.

Don't worry about variety. You've got two mixes here that could barely be more different, and I'm sure next month's mix will be totally different again.

Finally got a chance to listen to Mr. Mystery's offering all the way through, and as expected I really enjoyed it. This is a perfect example of what I expected and really wanted to hear from this series of submissions as well - a focus on substance over style. The effort you made to make transitions is appreciated, but I'm glad that you went with your gut and used songs that may not have fit well with any particular flow or direction.

The Pink Floyd track is one I've only heard a few times, and I enjoyed the chance to sit and listen to it through - for whatever reason, it really clued me in to the style of music you would deploy in the rest of the set - I can't explain why that is. I didn't look at the tracklist while listening, and was pretty surprised afterward to find that the Jarre track was one of my favorites. I think I preferred the first half of this mixtape (tracks 1 - 7 or so) to the second, but closing with Finished Symphony never fails. Kudos to using Baja as well; that and Rabbitweed were my two favorites from the XPander EP.

Champagne Supernova may have been overplayed or whatever, but fuck that, if it's an influence or a classic to you, I'm glad you played it.

Just to clarify (though I doubt it's even necessary):

This mix isn't about me moving on from trance - every single track on this mix was a part of my all-time-favourite list a long time before I ever laid my ears on trance.

There were two reasons I didn't play club music in this mix.

1) Most EDM/club music doesn't age very well
2) I would had ended playing the same tracks everyone else would anyway

Also, thanks to everyone for the feedback. I'm really glad you all got the general idea of this mix, I was really unsure whether it was going to be a complete disaster...

Really liked this one. I have to say I couldn't really get into the first couple of tracks, can't put my finger on why, but after that it got really good and I also like the flow. Thanks for introducing me to Billy Club, that one is ace. The mix can't end more perfectly with Finished Symphony.
