Reading through these recent posts a lightbulb went on in my head and I see now what part of the problem is - it seems that most people here only see hardware instruments as tools for recording and fail to see that many people like to just play. One of the main reasons I've always liked hardware is simply for the immediacy of powering it up, turning knobs, and playing, without having to turn on a computer, use a mouse to find/create sounds, etc. If you've seen my studio photos, you'd notice that, aside from a few key pieces, my hardware isn't even positioned in front of my computer - that's by design because I usually practice my piano playing, work on song ideas, play around with sounds, etc. with my hardware, not my computer. This may not be true for everybody, but I can get very inspired by having actual instruments in front of me, whereas I find making music with a mouse/computer to be a total inspiration killer.
