Pills alone aren't as effective as combination therapy. Are you talking to a therapist or seeking counselling at all? Do you know what CBT is?

Well yeah, but at the same point there is a huge overprescription of things to people which imo makes things worse. Rather than dealing with the cause of issues, gps are happy to just hand out pills like sweets to people.

This is why many countries have laws that limit how pharmaceutical companies market their products. The drawbacks are that they still find a way around it, or that they pay the fines and continue because the profits outweigh the consequences by a huge margin. Many times doctors have back end deals with these companies to prescribe certain drugs first over the competition, which is nothing short of unethical.

I only have to look at the huge fine Pfizer Canada received for the way it markets Viagra. It received a fine of a few million dollars, and promptly issued a statement saying that they would not contest it, pay the fines, continue their campaign and keep paying the subsequent fines. I think this shows quite clearly how profitable this industry is, and how it is sometimes at the expense of the end user.

I want to make clear that i was not advocating just popping pills and everything will be better in this thread, only stating that just because one type of medication does not work does not mean that one should give up trying another one.

The most important thing is to do a little research and have the proper dialogue with a doctor that you trust. They can't guess everything and all the negatives of certain medications should be said in full. It is this kind of discussion that helps to eventually lead to the right fit in terms of medication and other treatments that will fit your needs.

Pills are by no means the "magic cure", but they can be an integral part to the solution. You don't have to agree with a doctor if you think he is just handing out pills like candy without addressing all of the problems, and should never be afraid to ask for a second opinion if you feel this way. If you never speak up, chances are that they will never be able to fully understand everything that is going on.

expresso and wake an bake ftw!

I find people are too over-reliant on medication for almost anything. Headache - painkiller. Ill - paracetomol. Twisted ankle - ibuprofen. Struggle to sleep - sedatives. Feeling low - anti-depressents.

You would be right in that assumption, and it has a lot to do with how advertising for all of these things creates a need for a lot of things that are not necessary. Consumerism is a 2 headed beast, and because of it people with real problems sometimes get over looked.

so, what exactly would you consider medication for then, if not to treat such ailments? what was the point of developing medicines if we're not supposed to use them?

To be fair, prescription medication addiction is more prevalent than ever, we just do not hear about it as much because they are legal and taxable.

im just not one to care more about prescription addiction than i am any other addiction, especially when compared to cigs and alcohol. nobody ever got bashed because someone loved their panadol too much.

Because medication doesn't always treat the real root cause of people's problems, like poor coping skills, low socio-economic status, lack of social supports, etc. - all things that contribute to mood disorders.

Giving someone pills who hasn't got all areas of their life in check is like putting a band-aid on severed finger.

i dunno, maybe im just a cvnt but i simply dont care on a generic, wide-spread level. if someone has so many issues anyway, then meds are just gonna contribute to their shitty life. unlucky.

the obvious exception for me is children, now that shit needs paying attention to.

no addiction is more important than another because they are all the same thing: dependence to things that cause ill effects to health when abused.

Who cares about people getting bashed, (which they do, sports stars, actors and so on.) when the reality is that there is a sizable portion of the population addicted to medications they do not need? Peoples lives do get ruined because of this, not to mention the negative impact it has on the loved ones of these people.

Oxycontin for instance...
