if a cat gets defensive when you scratch its stomach it usually means that they have not accepted you as its master.

the submission that allow you to rub the stomach is something reserved usually for the mother. If your cat lets you do it, it means that it was properly integrated into the household. Many cats that don't let their masters touch their stomachs, can be a bi product of being taken away from the litter too young.
