Cannibal Holocaust achieved notability because its graphic violence aroused controversy. After its premiere in Italy, it was seized by a local magistrate, and Deodato was arrested on obscenity charges. He was charged with making a snuff film, due to rumors that some actors were killed on camera. Although Deodato was later cleared, the film was banned in Italy, the UK, Australia, and several other countries due to its graphic depiction of violence, sexual violence, and the slaughter of six animals. Some nations have since revoked the ban, but the film is still barred in several countries. The critic David Carter suggests the film is a commentary about civilized society.[2][3]

Check it out, and compare it to the others mentioned here. Maybe I'm wrong but i think the killing of a large turtle over 10 minues is pretty sick, even though the actors stated it was eaten...not to mention what happens to the crew is sick.

Thanks to shitty UK censorship laws, the UK cut has over 5 minutes of footage removed so I've never got round to seeing it.

So go download an uncut version?

//It's really not worth watching though, if you ask me. I didn't find that the extreme violence in the film elevated to anything whatsoever, save for the hackneyed 'violence in entertainment' schtick - as though it's some sort of commentary by merely existing. It's basically just flimsy footage of naked brown people dissecting various humans and animals. It's 1-dimensional shock value.

i think its interesting to see how civilized cultures lose all their values in hostile enviorments and what they are truly capable of. Also the year this movie was filmed in had lots of shock value for that era and broke many rules, which is why its banned in over 57 countries. Not alot of films have that power in my opinion. Its worth watching simply because the chances of another movie like this one are extremely low.

Peter Jackson at his best, IMO.

Yes! Haha, shit that was disturbing. I saw it back in high school. I vaguely remember an exploding penis in there somewhere

Surely the greatest thing Jackson has ever done.

"I kick ass for the Lord!"
"Your mother ate my dog!" "Not all of it."

You do make some good points, and I knew of the censorship before seeing the film - it still barely interested me throughout. I wanted to turn it off not because I was grossed out, but because I was simply bored. The same thing goes for movies like Men Behind the Sun and the Guinea Pig series - I love the filthy honesty of such films, and it is rather bold to make such a work, knowing it will be banned outright, or you'll even suffer assassination attempts like Pasolini (Salo) did - or in his case, a successful attempt - but it still doesn't alleviate the fact that these movies contain insipid characters amidst stolid acting, blurting out a generally mired script with only the brief, entertaining one-liners to keep things afloat. Don't get me wrong, I love the cheese-horror - Fulci and Argento immediately come to mind - but the more "extreme" films tend to plod along like more "extreme" pro wrestling matches might. The ultra-violence did not make Hostel in any way acceptable is what I am saying. Less tends to be so, so much more.
