i have a question that i hope someone can answer for me i want to get a new laptop with win 10 will it work out of the box do i need to worry about updates before it will work??

Ever since I bought my first computer in 1999 (Windows 98 + Acid Pro), I've only used Windows.

I bought my wife an iMac around 7 years ago cuz she was going to art school for film production, I was using my work laptop for music production at the time (Windows 7). Then I was let go from my job in Feb and they took the laptop of course. So I've started using the iMac as my main (and only) computer for music production.

I really hate Windows 8 and I feel the same way about Windows 10. I don't like the direction Microsoft is going. Plus with Windows 10 they send so much misc data to Microsoft servers that I don't trust them, privacy-wise. It's weird for me to say cuz I've always been a Windows user but I'm strictly Apple now. I don't think I'll ever buy a Windows computer again cuz I don't like their anything past Windows 7 and I feel uncomfortable with their harvesting of their users' data to try to sell them stuff.

My new job didn't give me a laptop, I have a Windows 7 desktop and I refuse to update it to Windows 10.

Do any of you hate this new "make Windows feel like a tablet" direction? And what about all the data MS sends to their own servers? I don't mean Windows Update, they're collecting your data. I don't know to what extent but I don't like any private data being snooped on. I do a lot of Internet activity related to several aspects of illegal psychoactives, so it makes me feel paranoid. Stuff related to music and psychoactive compounds are pretty much the only 2 things I use the Internet for.

All your data is probably being collected anyway, regardless of what OS you use. TOR Browser is a good way to stay private

it will work but there will be updates as microsoft constantly push out security updates and big fixes etc. Thankfully they're the most automatic they've ever been and unlike W8 or I daresay Vista, there haven;t been any major missteps.

You;re right that Windows 8 was a disaster in terms of trying to be a tablet/desktop hybrid and failing at both, but if anything, W10 is the fix.

They got it right and IMO, it is to W8, what W7 was to Vista.

I don't like all the background transmission services but those can all be switched off with a few clicks during a fresh install. As with all previous windows computers, I'd actually suggest for everyone to do a fresh install if it comes pre loaded with W10.

You make me feel old though; my first computer was a used Atari 400 in 1986. I had to program in most of the games from Atari user magazine by hand

So even though M$ are now charging for the upgrade, in certain circumstances they'll still honor an upgrade.

in my case, I accidentally installed W10 pro N (the euro version without media player) and it's not a path to upgrade from w8.1

I explained and the kind indian gentleman gave me a case number so when I'm ready to format back to 8,1, they'll honor the upgrade.

That makes me feel a little less ancient

I was a little kid and couldn't afford anything, I didn't even know what it was apart from it was a computer of some sort (we didn't have any in the house at that point). I think I found it at a jumble sale for like 10quid in a box and my parents lent me the money against several months pocket money lol. By then the Atari 400 was older than me and the commodore 64 had come out so people were probably dumping these early computers without thinking. I'm gutted I sold it when I was about 11 or 12. What the fuck was I thinking

As for the background services, just make sure you do the customer fresh install and flick all those little switches off.....
