For games they're probably fine but for serious video viewing it's like asking Begic to hold a discussion on the downfalls of homosexuality - you just know from the start it won't go well.

Yeah, there's that grainy composition, but I always thought that was due to crappy dvds. Whats wrong with LCD generally though?

It's a long story but the whole concept behind how it works contradicts what makes for a great picture.
That grainy composition is from bad video scaling, which imo is the most under-rated thing in TV's. In LCD's it's typically pretty average but that problem is not a fault with LCD per se as it can affect crap plasmas to but for some reason is almost always worse on LCD sets.
The biggest problem with LCD is that real contrast (i.e. not the BS ratio's quoted by manufacturers) and grey scale are a disaster because of the need for a backlight. The introduction of new tech that replaces the backlight with LED's will help heaps but this is still a while away.
LCD's just can't do blacks or grey's well. The image smearing and jitter issues are also still there despite some improvement and colours are exaggerated and not natural.
The non reflective screen is a double edged sword also - on one hand it is an advantage for rooms where the tv is opposite a lot of light but for most of us our viewing is done in the evening so this advantage is one you would rarely benefit from yet you still have all the downfalls regardless of when you view it.
If all we had was LCD i'd understand buying them but for video viewing (i.e. not gaming) unless ur after a small size I just don't get why anyone would buy LCD over plasma when plasma absolutely wipes the floor with LCD for picture/build quality.
Funnily enough every blind test conducted in a normally lit room I have ever seen has come out in favour of plasma but people still believe all the crap that got around about needing re-gassing etc when plasma came out (none of it true btw).
All this nonsense about power consumption is pretty ridiculous to - the avergae plasma user will consume as much power as boiling a kettle of water each day.

LCD's also have the ridiculous ideal of pumping the shite out of colours.. reds are so red they blind you.. to compensate for the crappy back levels
led backlight lcd is changing all that apparently though.

friend visited japan a few weeks back, he said they were going for 2k
and immediate future, as in there's a couple of other display technologies that are happening too, but OLED is probably what we'll see in our stores next
and oled isn't back lit, it's full color active matrix.
i'm guessing better sizes and costs will come down as just recently some manufacturer was the first to get an assembly line going for it
