mardi gras is actually very family oriented. It's only bourbon street that really has the 'girls gone wild' kind of activities. (which are fun too).
I love it for the food, the people and the culture. You can't beat the vibe in the french quater during mardi gras.
One of the great things about the parades (which actually start up about a month or two prior to Mardi gras) is that they are often funded by the most affluent families in the community. as such beads are throw from the 'rich' to the 'poor' and its kind of a symbolic way of giving back to the community by throwing beads and hosting a big ass block party that travels around the city streets.
I've been down here for the last three years for mardi gras in a row now and am very greatful for the great times I've had every year with family and friends.

*nusty does not wear sunglasses at night, they make it hard to see and you could trip
