The actual key changes completely at about 4.5% (ish). However if you think about it, at 3% the change is already so considerable that you might be better off actually playing that track with the next key rather than it's original key.

Also the other thing to remember is that the most important thing is that you want to compare the difference in pitch between the two records and not the 0 point.

Cheers

When u pitch up the song by 4.5 %, does the key change into the next step on the Camelot wheel? ie. 1A to 2A.

sure it does ... it is not all the way there but it is close enough for rock n' roll sort to speak. It is actually somewhere in the middle but closer to the next note. I forget the term for it, but usually it is close enough to mix with the next half-step. However, 1a does not go to 2a it jumps to 8a. why? 1a is Ab minor, and 8a is A minor (one half step increase).

cheers...

That's right. The actual numbers in the camelot scale don't follow the chromatic scale. They follow their own which is designed to help you know what goes with what rather than any order of things... if that makes sense.

Thanks for the help guys...

I know most of you said that trance songs that are written in a Major Key are rare but after I keyed my whole record collection, I found that a little less than 1/3 of my records are in Major Keys. Does that sound about right??

Would have to say that it sounds a little on the high side as I can only think of two in my record box currently out of 110. But it does depend on your music tastes totally so it may be so.

Depends on how you did it. If you used software the chances are that some of the are totally way off.

Sorry to sound a nOOb, but how do you actually set it up to find the key? Do you spin the record on the deck and play some keys on your keyboard and see which ones fits best with the song, or is it certain parts of the song. Please explain if you don't mind, thanks.

I keyed by playing my records and using the piano program downloaded from DJ prince's harmonic mixing website. I played the keys while the song is playing to determine which key the song is in...Maybe I was doing it way too fast since I was trying to rush and key all my records asap. I will post my list when I get home from work today to compare with what you guys have....
