So if you are a DJ, the thing to do is to make sure you don't market yourself, because you don't want to become popular, famous, and rich.

I'm sure Tiesto and Oakey and others like them really give a fuck what a couple dozen people on a messageboard think when they are playing to stadium sized crowds and making millions of dollars a year.

If they sucked that bad, the crowds wouldn't come.

That's nowhere near what I was saying.

What I was saying is that there are DJs who I think are better than Tiesto both technically and crowd-pleasing-wise. The reason that they are not above Tiesto on the list (which is more like a popularity poll than a list based on quality anyway) is because Tiesto (and/or his agency) knows how to market himself well.

You can become quite popular without all that, there are various DJs in the Top 10 that have accomplished that, but the only reason why Tiesto makes top of that list again is because he markets himself well enough to get all the votes from people that are not that much involved in EDM.

I don't have anything against that, it's just an observation. Obviously the guy has talent, but if you're just going to look at technical skills and crowd-pleasing skills (by music, not by offering concerts to be watched live over your cell phone or anything like that) there are DJs that are better than him, at least in my opinion. And I'm sure there is quite a bunch of people here that share that view.

hey the fella who started this thread has a good point and fairplay to him for expressing his opinions. goodman yourself and Tiesto (unlike Oakenfold) is a very good DJ, i can say that cause i attended many gigs by him in the last 4 years, and because i HAVE Every single liveset/album EVER by him, and theay are all good

remember its always easier to criticise than say goods things........

This could go on endlessly...endlessly....endlessly and endlessly

Some like Tiesto and worship him, some don't like Tiesto and bash him....

I think it's much more convenient to keep these thoughts in our minds, and not devote entire threads to it, it always ends up in humongous flamewars.

Unbelievable what one little man from Breda can cause in people's minds....and on every EDM-related forum for that matter...

I have heard Tiesto a couple of times and don't personally care for his sound, I found his music lifeless. That being said, I do think It's the tall poppy syndrome to some extent. People become easy targets when they reach the top of their field.

That, my friend, is exactley what is going on with these kids on this board....don't worry though they will grow out of it one day.

Hehe, potential huge thread this one, everyone has his opinion bout him...

My 2 cents: i dont have a problem with the fact that maybe he aint the best mixer out there and still is nr1 one 3 years in a row, the dj mag poll simply aint about mixing skills, mostly just loads of ppl voting for a popular dj.

Saw an interview with miss kittin yesterday in which she said that when she's spinning she's not doing it for the crowd but just for herself in the first place, doing what she enjoys, spinning the music she likes to hear.

Wouldnt dare to apply that to tiësto he is indeed alot more mainstream but i dont mind that, al long as i love his g'damn music :d:d

My biggest complaint with Tiesto is that he isn't very friendly (at least when he was here in Boston). He wouldn't sign autographs after the show all he did was chill with his "posse" or whatever and would try to avoid all the fans that wanted to greet him afterwards. No other DJ has ever given me such a cold shoulder, since then, I've lost respect for Tiesto as a performer because he doesn't recognize the people that gave him the fame he has today.

I've read something about that in an interview with tiësto. He sad that it can happens that hes like really tired and so on and like just want to go home or someting. He mentioned that he rarely does that and that hes always feeling sorry about it afterwards ...

Hey, i think its just normal that at some point u dont wanna see ur fans for a moment, no matter how cool we are

but at least if he cancelled the gig before, people could get refunds, not having to listen to a deejay that simply does not want to be there or put out his best effort or can't because he has hit a low. Go on vacation, that's my beef with Tiesto, the guy simply showed up to take the money and go away in 2002 (the place was fucking soldout for weeks and yet he put one of the worst displays I have ever seen and it showed how bad superstar deejays have become). If I see a deejay, I want him to actually be there or pretend such. I've thought it was all about the money then, so I gave up on Tiesto personally and I've been slated like hell for it. I want a deejay to want to be in Toronto, if I go to see him, he may not be feeling his best but at least he wants to be there, I think that adds to his performance.

with that being said, people will either hate or love him and probably few will be in between.
