There will always be a market for vinyl DJs, CD DJs and now Ableton DJs. This thread proves it. Different people look for different things when they consider what makes a good DJ. An Ableton DJ will probably never achieve the level of intimacy with your crowd than a DJ with 2 turntables and a mixer on a foldable desk can achieve. Of the three, I think the CD DJs will be the biggest loser since it's really in the middle. CDs will never have the level of innate respect than vinyl nor will it ever achieve creative greatness like Ableton. Sure Zabiela can scratch like a champ and do amazing things with loops but so can a Ableton DJ with a scratchable jog wheel. Zabiela himself admitted he used Ableton with a pair of CDJs to make that fantastic 5 minute mix with 5 different tracks. CDJs will serve as the backups for vinyl and Ableton. But enough about that...

To follow up on your very good post Scott, I think at the same time, the interaction with an Ableton DJ is more fun, because, as Sasha said, it puts some magic back into the DJ persona. I for one, love watching a good DJ like Digweed, Tenaglia etc mix on CD/vynil...but I can always tell exactly what they are doing. I can tell when Digweed is cueing up, when hes touching pitch, when hes slowing the record down a tad on the platter...but when I see Sasha...I have no fucking clue what hes doing...all I can go by is the sounds and whatever it seems like he is modifying via his controller.

I had a blast watching him use Ableton, he got really into it (like he said he can find his groove faster) and was dancing in front of his controller while using that echo effect during an amazingly long buildup...when he dropped the bass back in with the twist of a knob the club went crazy, and so did he!

So in the end...its the DJ that really matters, not what they are using or how they acheive their sound...although Ableton offers capabilities that are just so far beyond what you could do with decks/mixer.

Sasha has ALWAYS been like that - focused, not jumping around like a wounded duck. Ferry is known for his crowd interraction.
