Ok, this conversation has gotten very interesting.
I definitely understand that people are miffed about paying $$$ to see AvB and PvD, etc. When DJs get to these ranks, then they can charge more, and they should, it just makes economic sense. I'm sure we would all do this. It is nice that we have good promoters who can pull these guys in for those who love these DJs. Yes, it sucks--but it will still be packed to the brim.
For me, it comes down to the music. Despite the fact that AvB is getting more and more expensive to see (and some think he is a comercial sell out, blah, blah, blah), I think he is absolutely worth the $35. I listen to his ASOT almost every week and really dig what he spins. Whenever I see him, I have an AMAZING time--never regretting that I went. I guarantee you I will have the same attitude this Saturday--he will deliver.
I mean, hell, I spend a ton of cash to go to Miami every year for the WMC and I drop a wad on drinks at the club, so going to see a cheaper DJ whose music I don't know or like as well doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things. If I did like the cheaper DJ better, then bonus. I bet Andrew K or Ben Lost would come to Chicago for a reasonable price . I love it, so that's why I do it.
Just my 2 cents. Hope to see a lot of you all there.
