I thought this comment was pretty interesting.
Music has always been with people - as an art form, it's one of the most significant foundations when attempting to define a civilization or culture. The question must be asked - does music change the world or does the world change music?
My answer would be both. I think the rap argument was a pretty significant one, even if people weren't aware of the fact that they were actually discussing a reflection of our current society. People complain about the music and the message and what it (gasp!) might be promoting and how it might be influencing those pliable young minds of lower, middle and sometimes even upper society, yet they do not seek to understand the reason for such a thing in the first place. This world is shit - people are killed, they are raped, their pets are raped and killed, they are forced to carry their loved ones' heads, they are murdered by somebody armed with a button who is thousands of miles away, or any combination of any sort of horrible scenario you can envision - it's probably happened somewhere - it might even be happening right now. I know I have said it before, but this age is like none other - our lives lie in our own hands and at the press of a button it could all go away; no defense, no argument or protest or whining about how your rights to life have been violated - just death. People are at the mercy of others and have others at their very mercy and the only thing that keeps us all alive and well in our time is trust.
How does this relate to anything that is being discussed? Well, for starters, the weak have the power behind a weapon at a horrifying convenience. It's no longer survival of the fittest, but survival of the most well-armed. We all hang on a fucking toenail, lives in the balance, struggling to trust that somebody will not decide to nuke us today or tomorrow or will run that red light or will blow our fucking heads off from 600 yards away - and it's fucking scary. It's a world of fear and isolation anymore and, though the threat of imminent death has always been with us, our enemy has not always been ourselves, nor has this dilemma been addressed by people with such itchy trigger fingers. This fucked-up society of people infected with fear and violence has caused such a malaise so that the glorification of power is indeed one dreamed of by anyone callow enough to believe that it truly exists. In this respect, violence (any physical assertion over others) has become the supreme mental game for us all and it has become the religion of the subconscious and ignorant.
This malaise seeps from our media, our sense of 'entertainment' and infects people with this false narcissism and self-importance, attracting them to senses of power and expedient achievement for many different reasons. Coping? Compensation? Basic human drives? Who the hell knows. But the lure of such things starts in childhood and can either be confirmed or rejected by a number of different circumstances - to name one, the quality of parenting. I don't know if it needs to be said by now, but even 'good' parents do not create 'good' children nor do 'bad' parents necessarily produce 'bad' children. Sure, you can argue that there is some influence, but even so, parents were once children as well, so maybe it was the generation of the grandparents that should be blamed for such degrade? Maybe the grandparents' parents? And so on.
My point is, this is a shitty world and everything is influenced by everything. There is no single 'corrupting' factor in our society, nor does there exist any single element of true salvation or enlightenment. Rap music is both a liberating and a condemning element - produced by people who, some of which, had great childhoods and probably many of which had horrible ones. That is still no reason to villanize the element or necessarily the people who comprise the element, but rather, blame the society that produced such a thing. Blame the society that produced such people and such attitudes to rhyme about the very violence which created them. Blame the people for singing about the fucked up things in their fucked up world and then say that they make no sense and that everything is just peachy-keen and that they are rapping for no reason.
I'm not going to preach about abortion because it is a personal choice and absolutely nothing more, but please people, understand that even people with shitty parents can grow up to be your friends. Denying the very chance of their existence is a sad one indeed. This is not pro or anti-anything, this is just me stating that our society creates these people who create music who define a civilization who creates music who creates people who create society.
