I think it was originally said by Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster in their book "How to DJ: Properly". It seems to make sense to me.

I would say listening, rather than dancing, is for a producer what reading is for a writer. Otherwise it's like saying a writer who doesn't read aloud is like a producer who doesn't listen to music.

And I am sure produces (not all) are not dancing to tracks while they are creating and mastering their tracks. They are listening to them. And not all DJing is made to make people dance. A DJ can DJ chill out/downtempo or lounge music, and although some of it might be danceable, it's not really "dance" music per say and they aren't "dance DJs", although they might also DJ that kind of music as well. Nick Warren and D:Fuse are great examples DJ who mixes music to make people dance, and also does stuff for chilling. The producer is like the writer, while the DJ is the one who reads what the writer wrote out loud (like a speeker). Most EDM producers DJ their productions live (and may put a live spin on it) rather than "play" their productions like say on a keyboard. It's done, but not that common. A DJ has to have a good year, and usually that comes from listening to tracks over and over....kind of like someone memorizing a speech or an actor rehearsing their lines.
