there are ppl you can call to come over and let your dog out if you arent going to be around...something like dogwalkers. i guess they'd be called petsitters? i used one a few times when my dog was living with me in guelph. or you could just ask someone you know in town to stop by, which is something i've done for other friends.

Personally I don't think it's fair to have any lifestyle that keeps your dog alone for 12+ hour stretches - especially on weekends when that is your key time to bond and be with your animal.

I agree.

I didn't feel I could have a dog in Detroit because of the "party hours" - but now I can. My 12-hour partying every weekend is something that dosen't occur anymore. At most, I am gone 4-6 hours at night on a weekend to go see a show in Denver maybe 1-2 times a month. I'm home on weekdays after 5pm and she's not left alone more than 6 hours at a time on weekdays. On weekends, she comes with me hiking or to the dog park with friends.

For trips, dogsitters or friends. But I have the whole west to explore and its extremely dog friendly so these are rare.

Agreed. Having a dog is like having a child. It's a lot of responibility as you're taking care of another life - human or animal it doesn't matter. If you're going to have a dog, make sure you're willing to take on the responsibilities.

which is exactly why i dont have a pet. I would like to have one, but don;t want to take care of it at all, and don;t want it in the house.

exactly. i got sonic when i was young(he's 8 1/2 now) and put all the time and effort into his training when i had less demands on my time. i put alot of work into him and i won't be getting another dog for a very long time because i know that between school and a career my hrs won't be regular enough for me to give a dog the attention it needs. i'm so glad i have sonic now though. i don't think i'll ever have another dog who is as amazing as he is <3
