One of the biggest holes I could pic in Chris' work is that the text obstructs the subject matter of the photo, rather than flow around it like my demonstration.
Rather than slag it off I'd prefer to make some helpful suggestions. As mentioned, try to flow the text, also vary the fonts used. It's nice enough but some variety would look awesome. Maybe even take a standard font and modify it to create something unique.
Also take a little more care with alignment, so for example the "S" os "stone" sits directly inline under the "R" of "solar". Kerning letter pairs as well, in "sympathy" look at the gap between the Y and the M, then the M and the P. Consistant spacing is good and looks neat.
Here's a quick Black Hole sleeve I made.

Although the photo isn't that good (cheap camera) it's one I took myself in a club and I think it's pretty cool.
So to some up, DevanteS, good work, room for improvement!
Hope you can amaze us all soon, including the picky ones! |
Hey Nautica,
i want to thank you for your criticisms. I really appreciate them.
One thing you can look forward to in life is to continue to learn and grow, and your comments have definitely made me want to improve my graphic skills so i can satisfy even the pickiest of critics... like you.
the point of my graphics is not to flex my graphic skills, but instead to find and match appropriate graphics to a song that invoke the mood of the song. the end project that i have in mind is that i want to make a musical jukebox on my homepage www.chrispork.com so that anyone can flip through the pictures to hear the song that matches the graphic. you probably don't know but i do have wma rips for every single graphic that you see. each wma rip is about 500kb, so even 56k users can listen.
why the jukebox? trance is a huge part of my life and i want to share it with people. i make the graphic for 2 crowds. first, the non trance listeners, they can listen to some of the classics that have moved me. secondly, the hardcore trance fans. with the help from guys like Starfox, i can get the latest trance tunes and push it out here in the TA forums so that people can hear them. coming up next.. Ghostland featuring Sinead o Conner - Guide me god (pvd remix). i'm a pvd whore just like starfox and there is no greater feeling for me than to push out the latest pvd track/remix
in terms of graphic skills i do believe that i'm getting better. these were my first graphics
[1. solar stone - speak in sympathy
2. tiesto -in my memory
3. mother's pride - learning to fly
4. lost tribe - angel ]
....when i see these graphics i cringe b/c of their simplicity and crudeness.
but i am proud of some of recent work, which i think shows improvement in my spacing and layout
(1. solarcoaster 2. janeiro 3.pvd remix of marcoV 4. tillmann's on the run 5. starecase - faith)
but you are right i do need to vary my text, and the flow of it on the page
but sometimes i hear a song, and it just reminds me of a certain graphic. that Louise nurding pic for Halcyon just perfectly fits the mood for the song, she is in such a peaceful state of halcyon.
the oceanlabs pic of late is a very weak attempt, but it was a quick job as a favor for my friend miss_e who was feeling blue and loved that song.
the font that i use, kabel md pt, will always be the same b/c i want to maintain some consistency when the jukebox project is finally complete
but all in all, i really do appreciate your criticisms. there is nothing more satisfying that appeasing the harshest of your critics
regards,
Chris
