It's funny, Australia is pretty young compared to America, and our population far smaller, which I think has kept our accent more consistent nationally for many years.

Queenslanders seem to heavily emphasise the typical bogan/ocker accent that all foreigns have known in Steve Irwin etc, while the further south one travels the softer/more refined the accent seems to become in general, though there are pockets of stronger in there too.

I think a majority of the time I can pick a Queenslander vs a Welshman vs a Victorian, but all the other states are still blurry to me.

Accents are a very interesting thing. You have to wonder how they develop and why huge, huge nations all adopt similar mannerisms and phrases etc, and in such a short time. It's only been 200 odd years since Australia was settled, but already we are so distinctly different from England linguistically.

though to be fair, since canada is swamped with US media, the difference in avg yank tv accent (whatever that is) and canadian accent is slowly diminishing. and there isn't much of a regional accent in canada, unless you're from newfoundland or quebec

Queenslanders, in general, sound petty bad to me. Maybe that means I don't sound quite so bad? Or just wishful thinking

BUT I KNOW I don't sound like a Far North Queenslander. Ugh. My gf's parents live up in Cairns, and every time we go and visit I'm simply amazed that people can sound so hick-like (or bogan/ocker, if you prefer) without even trying. It's like another world. Not her parents specifically (they're from Canberra, but damn, I think the accent is waring off...or on...?), just everyone else.

Though, I posted up my voice some months ago, reciting the 'Choose Life' monologue from Trainspotting. Jolz said I sounded like a bogan, or something along those lines
