Don't overextend on college applications - be sure to shop around. No matter what your grades were in HS, there's going to be somewhere willing to give you a deal. You don't necessarily have to go to the most prestigious school you get into.

And those of us that take school seriously (aka, get good grades) have scholarships. THAT'S how we pay for it.

and those of us that almost but couldn't quite qualify for scholarships, have loans out or have family help. Big surprise, it's the way of life.

most people take out loans for school; it's not as big of a deal as you think.

What about wanting to be educated, intelligent? I mean do you think everybody studies just so they could get a certain job?

To be fair I was a little shafted with my financial situation. My parents have money, not LOADS but definitely too much for me to qualify for financial aid. As such I couldn't go to USC even though I got accepted

most colleges are just playing the game. they raise their tuition because people have formed the idea that the more expensive a school is, the better....

I don't care what anyone says but $30,000 a year for the average college tution is just a slap in the face to those of us who do want to be educated. $5-10,000 a year seems fair to cover most colleges' costs and wouldn't be a whole lot of cost to this government considering all the other shit it pours our money into.

No one said everyone leaves college having gotten an education. Making education more available to everyone in the country doesn't mean everyone's gonna go in the first place. And it sure as hell doesn't mean everyone's going to take it seriously. People who pay $40-50,000 a year don't even fully take college seriously.

What this means is that people will drop out. People will realize it's not for them, just like the people now who find their calling doing manual labor, or whatever it may be that you're considering "paying someone to do for you". People will get weeded out of the system if they're not taking it seriously, and yes, we will still have the blue collar workers and the gas pumpers.

You're not even taking into account that so many of these "blue-collar" jobs that you "pay someone else to do" for you are relatively high-paying. Kids will still say "no" to 4-7 years of school, if they can get into plumbing or electrician work and pretty good money at the age of 18.

And the gas-station worker was a bad example because I've never met or seen one who was American. I doubt people with green cards would be included in whatever educational/public-college program would be implemented, so your gas guys, landscape guys, manicure/pedicure ladies, grocery store people, 7/11 and Duane Reade people, and hair salon ladies will STILL be there.

I quote, "I know I've made it when I'm making $1000/hr." Don't know how you could have understood that to be anything else.. I already work in a huge financial office and it's really not that hard to get clients. I set up seminars just for that purpose.

Seeing as I'm already over $10k in the hole from student loans, I agree. But wouldn't you want your government to subsidize college tuition without repayment? Europe does great with. It helps the economy, and it helps you.

I think krypton has all the right to complain as a tax payer. I also think public education in the US needs cereal reconstruction; from the bottom up. teachers are not well paid. I think the problem will persist unless the govt decides to cut their spending in other areas, which would be ideal but not likely. And, for me, it's all about empowering the youth with knowledge, in that way our society flourishes.. or somethin'

+1. We all know even public education needs to begin its day with a nutritious breakfast!
