DJing evolves over time, from records to CD's to laptops to what ever is next. DJ is supposed to be about performing for a crowd and entertaining them through music. Sure one day it literally meant "Disc Jockey", even though that was for the radio guys, but that meaning has evolved to mean so much more. Just like some people insisted using CD's wasn't real DJing at one point (actually, probably still do), people now say that using laptops isn't. I've never used a laptop to DJ, but I can appreciate the people who do. It seems to be that a proper laptop DJ can be even more creative than just using CD's (thats way I moved to CD's, becasue I could be more creative), and that's what it's all about. We creative a sound for the audeince, we don't just play a record from start to finish.

you are confusing DJ with Entertainer....they both may use music to entertain people but a DJ is a Disc Jockey....not a Computer Jockey.

Old school thinking.

So what if CD's had been invented square instead a round? Or what if people had used "8 Tracks" to DJ in the seventies?

Would you not have considered it DJing?

What is the word "disc" representing in the term "disc jockey"? It represtents a term for a music track. It was just that records happened to be the medium at the time, but times change. Just because the medium isn't round the term doesn't count anymore? You have to take it THAT literal?

I guess you hate the term football too don't you...

This is what we call semantics ladies and gentlemen. Tactics best reserved for attorneys and women in relationships.
I hereby propose what will heretofore be known as Amendment 1 to this thread title, revising it to "Who is most famous Canadian born techno, house, or trance entertainer, producer, or DJ who is currently, formerly, or originated from Toronto or it's suburbs, extending to and including Oshawa and Pickering in the east, Newmarket in the north, and Oakville and Mississauga in the west, having permanent residence there for a minimum period of 1 year."
Phew. That should cover it. Though I remain open to revising.

I read this whole thread, and laugh at those who think Deadmaus is really mixing and adding effects and processing sound when he is on stage.
NEWSFLASH - his laptop is pre-programmed with a set of his tunes, as he jumps up and down to them, adding effects here and there. Thats why he downplays djs, the dude can't mix.

For those who don't know, most live PA artists are hacks. Back in the day, having to help the sound crew set up for these "live" artists, often we were told to just set up a keyboard and DAT machine. Artists like Nostrum, Hibernate and Aponaut just jump up and down to pre-recorded mixes. IF anyone was backstage at Wintergalactic 2001, you wouldve noticed that Hibernate's equipment wasnt even connected to anything.

Hatiras can at least physically mix his tunes together - live - aka dj.

*Also Deadmaus isnt from Toronto or St.Catherines, he`s from Niagara Falls.

He may not be touring the globe every weekend yet, but in the past 8 months I have had the pleasure of seeing him rock a party in Moscow and Awakenings NYE, I regret not being able to see him at Love Parade. He regularly plays club gigs and some festivals around Europe and is a familiar face in Brazil. Production wise he is making his mark too, past and present.

Anyways, not surprised by the replies in the thread but just thought he deserved a mention as another Toronto dj actually known outside Ontario.

THANK YOU KATE!

I actually came into this thread to post abt Patrick DSP!

He's hands down my favourite DJ ever to hail from Toronto!

(and he's in my Top 5 list as well!!)

The man's sets (live and DJ) are fucking banging a fuck! Brilliant!!

I really wish he's come to Toronto bc he's the only DJ im still DYING to see spin live!!
