no, it isn't. not even close. |
Yes it fucking is. When someone says "We deserved to win" or similar in a footballing context they're not saying "Me and fellow members of the foreign fanbase" they're saying "the team". Case in point:
"I just hope we can hold them off."
He's quite obviously not referring to himself or any supporters because none of the supporters nor him are actually playing Liverpool. It would be semantic gibberish if the "we" is supposed to include the supporters. It's not even as if, by sitting there watching his TV/Internet stream in the US, he's taking part in an indirect way in Chelsea "holding off" Liverpool.
By saying "we" he is including the team, the manager, the coaching staff and all the supporters there actually audibly motivating the players in a bracket with himself. Now, literally speaking, he's having fuck-all effect on the game. He isn't actually part of what's happening at Stamford Bridge. That's why he's attempting to include himself. By becoming part of some spacially transcendental totality with the club he's trying to include himself in the club.
Now at this point you've got one of two options. Either that includes the culture surrounding the club that gives it identity as much as any players on the pitch, in which case he's deluded, or his "support" of the club doesn't extend beyond what he's seeing on screen. In the former case: I win. In the latter case, he's fucking plastic! He's not "as much of a fan" as people who are actually part of the club on a less superficial level.
