I sort of agree. I think "Mateus" (Portuguese for Matthew) is a really nice name, but every Mateus I've ever met turned out to be a bit of a nuisance, so it's a no-no. On the other hand, I also like the name "Owen" but it is not a common name here in Brazil, so I bet this is going to be a pain in the arse for the kid when he grows up, having to spell his name every single day of his life. That's why I'm more conservative when it comes to names.

this is true kids can be mean. funny how the same name can be considered exotic or mundane depending on what country your from. In the US, Owen is pretty safe. I couldn't help but think of Owen Wilson if I used that name. But who knows, one day your little Owen might grow up to be a sneaker rebel like yourself.

Owen is my dad's first name. I'm not sure of the naming conventions in Brazil, but here most middle names are the same sorts of names as first names.

It's not just the kids, you see? You often need to tell your name in loads of different occasions, and having an unusual name is often a bit of a problem. My fiancée always has to struggle when she's talking to people over the phone and she needs to tell what her name is, for example. I don't think Kaoru is such a difficult name but, I don't know, as you said the same name can be exotic or mundane depending on where you are.

I was just being silly

We don't really have "middle names" so to speak here in Brazil. It usually works like this:

[1st Name] + [Possible 2nd name] + [Mother's Surname] + [Father's Surname]

The 2nd name would be more like your middle name, but it's rarely is in the middle (the mother's family name is the middle name if you've got just one actual name). My full forename, for example, is "Marcus Vinicius", actually, and "De Lira" is just my mother's Surname (I'd rather keep my last name secret, if you don't mind).

And that reminds me that my name is too damn long...
