So you didn't start this thread with an alt?
And if it wasn't you, why did he think it was?? |
No. Maybe it's because I'm always vocal about our rights and so was the op. The thing is I wouldn't create another account to say what's on my mind. This is something that I'm passionate about; something I've grown up with with my entire life.
You have to ask him if you want his perspective.

Thanks I will have a look because I *crave* more info....the last book left me: I couldnt sleep last night LOLOLOL...lame, I know.
Um, well, I choose not to participate in discussions I dont have a lot of "facts" on (hence me getting some books). Before this, my obsession was Africa and its conflicts, so, while I am pretty well read in that area (and even Cambodia and North Korea) I dont have much depth in Isreal/Palestine besides the basics and the riot-inducing rants from every angle.
I feel the media is not a very good source of solid material, and unfortunately, the news has been my main source for this conflict. I dont trust everything I hear and like to listen to peoples discussions and see various point of views before piping in |
Gotcha That's a respectable approach on your behalf. IMO, there's nothing worse than having someone debate a topic they don't know much about. Especially when it's about this conflict.. naturally, it really gets on my nerves.
Obviously, the media's very skewed towards one side of the conflict here in NA. BBC and Al Jazeera are my preferred news outlets when it comes to Middle Eastern politics. I find that they both give a more balanced review of events there than outlets such as CNN. They still do have their biases though.
So.. I really need to read up more about African history. Honestly, it's a weak point for me and I do need to strengthen my understanding of it. I've only read about countries like Nigeria, South Africa, ad Egypt before. My knowledge of other areas is very limited. Any noteworthy recommendations?
If you end up reading Winslow's book, do let me know what you think of it. I'll give you my two cents once I get to reading that book.

Thanks There are too many people out there who argue off off pure emotion, and emotion never solved anything in this world (in fact I think it has made it far worse). Too many people have lost the sense to be rational and look at all facts from all sides before making an uneducated rant that just makes zero sense whatsoever (did you see the guy ranting in the Cor about the oil spill.....FFS, if I could prove my point any more clearly!) I may not be the most "wordy" person in an argument, however, when I do contribute, I tend to make sure I know what I am talking about before I jump in.....
I do not like to see people suffer and I am emotional in that sense, but I still like to know whats REALLY going on. I think the news always has their own agenda, which is why I prefer reading books based on people's real-life experiences. Especially the average-joe who has very little to benefit by convincing me of their "side of things."
I will try to gather some books I think were important on Africa. I usually give them off to others to read, so let me get a clear thought process on the tons of titles and authors going through my head and get back to you. I will go home and look through my stacks. My main focus was Sudan/Darfur, Rwanda, Uganda if you are interested in those areas.....
