Here's the thing. There's a shit load of good music out there, BUT, most DJ's are ego maniacs that prefer to a; play their own crappy music and b; get trashed. So it seems that DJ's would rather make it about them (and their posse) than take the time to figure out what the crowd wants/needs to shake it, and (the big one) treat DJing like a real fucking job.

Um for me I'd say it's the complete and polar opposite of this.

Instead of a dj playing true to what made them a dj and their sound AND at the same time pleasing the crowd, which creates for a happy medium. Many djs nowadays just play what the crowd wants to hear because they are lazy and it's easier to just drop anthem after anthem than create a decent set/vibe at a party.

Tons of great points shared here. IMO it is about personal experience. It's not that the scene sucks; just it has become such a molested version of itself. AND NOT THE GOOD KIND...BAD KIND. THINK UNCLE AND CHILDHOOD

Agree totally with this. Also, people are relatively impatient (the general crowd) so very rarely is it (as a whole) satisfied with something that builds and has melody or something you can appreciate in each beat. Personally, the 2000-2005 trance (and even some of the stuff produced later but never played) was and is my favourite. As for DJs, guys like Menno, Rank1 and Ronski Speed, at least when I've seen them seem to stick to the "old" days. That's strictly talking about trance. At least in Toronto there is still access to that and enough people who want to listen to it. Not much once you leave downtown and outwards into the GTA and beyond. I'm ok with anthems btw, there just aren't any REAL ones the way there used to be (i.e. almost every other track is an "anthem"). I dunno whether Vola is packed all the time, but it seems to attract the right artists. Hopefully there's a new generation of trance (and other EDM genres) addicts that allow the older type of sounds to be popular still. Otherwise, it's just "electro" til your ears bleed.
