my aunt and her husband used to live there too , they had a nice life and both of their sons were born there , but they had to leave in 1990 or 91 i think , they had to leave everything back there

Well, I'm sure he worked hard, but I tend to be suspicious/skeptical about Arabs going to West Africa and getting rich a la self-made man image (no disrespect to your uncle of course). Lebanese in particular tend to control the entire economy of these countries because they have a monopoly on trade. They can do whatever they want with prices, and tend to NEVER re-invest locally...sucking resources, both material and human, out of the country and never reinvesting domestically is anathema to economic growth, and the result is often uprising and war by the local population. Click here for interesting article on Liberia.

Rafik Hariri assassinated.

Rafik Hariri was just assassinated. Click here. Car bomb right along the coast of Beirut, in front of the Saint George. I can't believe this. Not that the guy was a saint, but he did do a lot to help restore Lebanon's image as a bustling little Medditeranean country and rebuilt the entire Beirut downtown, despite the fact that he endetted the country beyong belief. But what's more worrisome is that I fear the Syrian government was behind this, considering the fact that Hariri was leading the opposition to the Syrian presence in Lebanon. Talk about civil war is in the air again, and I'm sure the worst is to come. Truly a sad day

PS. I know this has nothing to do with Shawerma or Arab food, but I figured I'd use this thread since politics have already been discussed here, and I didn't feel that this warranted a thread on it's own considering the fact that in all probability, only the Arab TAs would be interested in this.

Better late than never And besides, I didn't see a thread about it neither here nor in the political forum, nor was it discussed in any other threads, so I figured I'd bring it up.

As for being there, ya I know. I spent most of my summer at the St George and Sky Bar (in a hotel right next to that area).
