Simplifying it? How is modern trance any simpler than classic trance? Classic trance is very simplistic and repetitive. Epic trance actually has more musical merit than classic trance. It's ridiculous to assume that all breakdowns are bad, all melodies are pop and that all classic trance was good. A lot of it was absolute shite, just as a lot of modern trance is.

Anyone who thinks that melodies are bad things is obviously a very boring sod indeed. Not all epic trance melodies are massive, not all of them are pop and some of them are very subtle indeed. Ishkur's argument that it demeans the real meaning of trance is partially acceptable (although the progressive scene still maintains traditional trance values, so why not just ignore epic trance if you don't like anthems?), but anyone who wasn't listening to trance pre 97 or who has ever enjoyed epic trance is just being an elitist prick if they try to pass that argument off.

Simplifying it was perhaps a narrow choice of term. What I meant was that producers took out the most immediate and instantly recognizable elements and exaggerated them more and more in order to make it appeal to a wider audience. A good example of this is when I played Eternal Basement - Taking Place In You to some people who were really into trance of today's standard. The ominous, brooding atmosphere and the absence of catchy riffs and hooks wasn't something they managed to connect to at once and they immediately wrote it off, whereas soon as a Tiesto set from 2 years ago crammed full with epic trance of today came in it was instantly praised.

The rest of your post I agree with pretty much. Saying Ferry killed trance is a bit off, but his blueprint of the epic trance formula certainly didn't do trance a favor.

Like for example. Paul does it alot. Listen to Face 2 face. You can tell he is trying to say something to you. His reflections album is the same way. Almost every track has a meaning, and wants to send you a message. In my opinion his tracks without vocals have a greater meaning then the ones with vocals. I think he is basically the only dj that will actually sing with every song in his tracklist, because most of the time personal to him. If you wan't another example check out his mix of the couch, or the humate mix of leban.

When i look at some of these new tracklists & productions, it seems like the tracks are just thrown into reason. And artists just throw a jumble of synths together, and keep redoing stuff till they "think" they come up with something catchy. It does not seem like there is a meaning in any of them. Then they look in the news paper for some cool name.

Even some tracks with vocals mean nothing, satellite? can anyone tell me the meaning to it?
