You mentioning The Meltdown made me realize I bought this compilation in 1994 and looking at the tracks I think it's an awesome compilation now with many bombs on it:

No word of Goa back then.

As a Jam&Spoon fan, Stella at the time didn't make me say wow that's awesome trance, this 1993 one and e.g. Alien Factory did:

2001 was pretty much the last outstanding year for trance. 2002 and 2003 were just solid. 2004 was the year of the remakes, enough said about that. Trance fell off entirely in 2005 especially with a washed up Paul van dyk dethrowning Tiesto in DJ Mag.

"Goa/Psy Trance doesn't need evolution. It's a genre that has been perfected long time ago. Deal with it. Enjoy it. Psy trance is, the most avant-garde music in all styles of the music spectrum."

Anyways, awesome thread! Viva Mortal Kombat music! Viva el Trance!

I've read some bullshit in my time on TA, but this could be one for the history books.

Good post, though I'd argue that trance was around before 1993...maybe it wasn't established as "trance" yet, but that was the period when the sounds were coming together. A lot of people say that either the 1992 tracks "We Came In Peace" by Dance 2 Trance or "Age Of Love (Jam & Spoon Mix)" by Age Of Love were the first trance tunes, but I say it would be Red Mecca's "Sura Kijame" from 1990. This was the period of progression from acid house & progressive tech into more dreamy, darker elements that were prevalent in a lot of real early trance tunes. The sound of "Sura Kijame" was also very similar to Dance 2 Trance's first release, "Let's Get Rollin", which was released one year later in 1991.

For God's sake people, We Came In Peace came out in '91, not '92. Hell, '90 if you count the promo vinyl!

Discogs proofy

Another Dance 2 Trance single, Let's Get Rollin', also came out in '91, the titular track another easy contender for early trance: Another Discogs proofy

Guess the reason this always gets confused is We Came In Peace was the B-Sides to those singles, and didn't get its own single until later, when it proved far more popular than the A-Sides it came with.
