A Christian website called "answering infidels"...hmmm...wonder if that's biased!

Do me a favour and find me hadith #5133-4 from Sahih al-Bukhari because the reference listed in [2] does not exist. There are many books in Bukhari's collection and the fact that one is not mentioned questions the credibility of your source.

The website you quoted was explaining through assumptions the way arab society functioned and how that didnt facilitate the idea that mohammad took aisha in his bed at 9. However, i have concrete evidence, not ASSUMPTION, written showing what mohammad did in Bukhari''s hadith, which by the way is the most respected and popular hadith out there utilizes by 90% of muslims.

Was Mohammed a pedophile?
The literature "Sahih Al-Bukhari" comes in nine volumes and contains thousands of Hadiths describing Mohammed's life. It talks about "Aisha" the girl in Volumes 5 and 7. Since taking a child bride was so unusual, it seems Mohammed claimed Allah had spoken to him in order to overcome the strong protests of the child's father. Thus, the marriage ceremony occurred when the girl was 6 and finalized through intercourse when she was nine.

Source Document:

"...[T]he Prophet (Muhammed) said to her (Aisha), 'You have been shown to me twice in my dream. I saw you pictured on a piece of silk and someone said (to me). 'This is your wife.' When I uncovered the picture, I saw that it was yours. I said, 'If this is from Allah, it will be done.'" (Hadith, Sahih Bukhari 5:58:235)

"[T]he Prophet (Muhammed) married her (Aisha) when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death)." (Hadith, Sahih Bukhari 7:62:64)

Narrated Aisha:

The Prophet engaged me when I was a girl of six (years). We went to Medina and stayed at the home of Bani-al-Harith bin Khazraj. Then I got ill and my hair fell down. Later on my hair grew (again) and my mother, Um Ruman, came to me while I was playing in a swing with some of my girl friends. She called me, and I went to her, not knowing what she wanted to do to me. She caught me by the hand and made me stand at the door of the house. I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age. (Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 58, Number 234)

Yes, a lot of the justification was through assumption, but still based on hadith, so there was also primary source evidence that would back it up...I'm sure you saw them when you clicked on the link.

However, I commend you for finding the exact hadith...I have the complete collection of Sahih al-Bukhari at home and I will look for Volume 7, Book 62 (somewhere in a box in my basement) and I will re-affirm what we're finding on the internet.

I also want to thank you for teaching me something I didn't know, which is that Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) actually saw Ayesha in a dream, and that Allah had destined this union. If this is the case, then there is absolutely no further argument that I can offer!

Just as the Quran and Islam was revealed directly to the Prophet (pbuh) and we believe this to be true, we believe any other documented and authenticated (through strong hadith--like the ones from Bukhari) communications to him from Allah have to be true. If this is Hadith certified by Bukhari, then, as you said, it is practically fact (although not as strong as the Quran itself).

So yes, you could interpret this is pedophilia but because of the divine source of this marriage, it's not something that you can attach a worldly meaning to; it's something very sacred and special, and Ayesha is one of the most honorable women in Islam (there are hadith that indicate that the top three women (in terms of honour, piety, and faith in God) are Mary (mother of Jesus), Ayesha, and Fatima (daughter of the Prophet (pbuh)). I remember this from the teachings at the mosque I attend; forgive me if I'm wrong but I will again check this out.

There are many other hadith that indicate the love that Ayesha and the Prophet (pbuh) had for eachother and how she was the best of the wives of the Prophet (pbuh). So you can't just focus on her age when the marriage was consummated but on her role in Islam, and her importance to the Prophet (pbuh). She was a very strong advocate and extremely intelligent.

Obviously, if the Prophet (pbuh) dreamt of her, this had to be a special woman.

P.S. "pbuh" means "Peace Be Upon Him" which is a statement of respect that Muslims will use when speaking or writing about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)

If you want someone to see your viewpoint, you need to explain the issue and what it means to you. Tell us how you perceive it and how you came to the coclusions you did. you are coming from a different perspective on the issue that many of us do not understand perhaps because we were never exposed to it, or learned about certain issues. I took womens studies last year and i know the frustration that can sometimes come about when my friends completely discard soemthing that ive learned in class to be true for example. i also learned though that if i take the time to expalin where my ideas and thoughts are coming from, it makes more sense. Not to say they always agree, but they see how others can see it differently... ( no , im not a man-hater :P)
Let us know the whats and whys, im sure you'll get better feedback than by assuming everyones dumb=)
