Holy Jebus, what an unforgettable night.
Guy Ornadel surprised the shit out of me. Fuck, I didn't even know who he was, but from 1am till 2 he was throwing such a great set down that he had me moving non stop for the entire hour. So many great tracks, and it was paced very nicely as well. I noticed some DJs have a 6th sense about how long is too long and how hard is too hard. Guy definitely did because his tmings were top-notch. I have a small list of DJs that I expected nothing out of that that really impressed me, and Guy definitely earned himself a spot on that list.
Rank 1, I dunno. There was something that just didn't sit right with me throughout his whole set. His set was allright, but really nothing extraordinary when compared to all the other sets that I've heard in my short clubbing experience. for some reason, none of his tracks really excited me, and to me, it was kinda funny to see the whole floor going apeshit when all that's going on is that there's some drawn out melody playing. That's another thing I didn't like about his set, for the most part, it was like
beat-beat-beat-beat-WHOOSHsound-slowDraggedOutMelody-beat-beat-beat. Rinse and repeat.
The epic melodies alone bore me, and I couldn't dance to just beat-beat-beat. So that was kind of a downer. Oh, also, he MURDERED Silence. And I don't mean like the good kind of murdered that makes you feel all giddy inside, I mean he actually murdered that track. Prior to this night, I was convinced it was impossible to ruin such a classic - I mean you really REALLY have to try, but Piet succeeded. The vocals were minimal - I was so ready for that uber Silence chorus moment, and it never came, instead I got some techy shit synth with the vocals somewhere in the background. Hearing Airwave and Love Theme Dusk was awesome though. But even those two tracks just marginally excited me. Needless to say, for the most part of his set I was resting or wandering around.
But at 4am everything changed - it was time for Yoji to take over the decks. (In a way, I'm gonna give thanks to Piet for giving me the much needed break so I would have a fresh body for Yoji to destroy) The first track was dragged out a bit imo. And in general it took him some time to get started, but once he did, boy oh boy, it was puuuuuure insanity. HARD, HARD, HARD INSANITY. I felt like an ADHD patient high on a pound of sugar.
The tracks he was banging out, WOW - Monochroma twice, that's right, TWICE! Yoji, you crazy mofo, that track is permanently embedded in my brain now, and I don't think I can get rid of it (not that I want to really - after last night permanent insanity is to be expected).
In the beginning somewhere he played Yoji Biomehanika - 'Never End' [Version-x]. That was sick too. I'm just listening to it now on his EM.
Advanced too! I loved how he fucking set up that track. NO ONE expected him to play it, so he teased the crowd with a note or two of it, just to give the people a taste, and fuck, everybody was HOOKED. When I first heard it, I was like, "did I just hear right?", and then moments later Yoji brought that track down HARD.
And Prodigy - Firestarter. Shit son, I remember I was sitting up on the stage resting, and then I heard that trademark Firestarter synth, and it took me all of half a second to get right back in the middle of the dancefloor and go insane. He completely changed the track, but it was still an awesome rendition of it, and perfectly in style with the rest of his set.
But of course, how can one leave out Hardstyle Disco? You can't. The track gets hold of your body and brain, and keeps them hostage in 5, 6 minutes of BLISS.
I gotta say though, the man is truly a DJ, with skills on the decks beyond anything I've ever seen. He doesn't just slap one track after another, he fucking changes as he sees fit. He's one of the few DJs to realise the mixer contains a lot more than just a cross-fader. The shit he was doing with the loops, the distortions, the beats, and then just some things I can't even describe other than say that they were GODLY.
Yeah, he's a dick (I was dissapointed he only played 2.5 hours), but he's got a reputation and the skills to get away with it imo. I think a lot of people here underestimate what kind of a superstar he is in Japan and Europe. And ROFL at him asking Sasha why his shirt was signed by Rank 1 under Yoji's name! If I was him, I would have signed my name so that the end result would look like: YOJI > Rank 1.
In other news, the KH was fucking amazing. I so needed this night because I fell in love with Guv all over again. I dunno WTF happened today, but lo and behold THERE WAS SPACE TO DANCE! LOTS of it. I fucking looooved it. Even right up in front of the DJ booth I could move around freely and there was a shitload of space around me, no one pushing, and EVERYONE enjoying themselves. It was off the hook! And the temperature was PERFECt too - hot enough to kinda build up a sweat, but no so hot that you're sweating buckets and 'enjoying' everyone else's BO. Goddamn I know this is just a dream, but I wish Guv would have more night like this (and by this, I mean not packed to the tits).
Finally, what made the night even better than it was already was the chance to meet so many of you. P.S. I apologize for last night and for the future, but I absolutely cannot comprehend what people are saying to me in the club, it's a serious problem, and I look like a retard because of it. Honestly, don't worry about my hearing, just shout whatever you want to say in my ear. I'm gonna try to go through the people in some sort of fucked-up chronological order:
I think the first person I met was Beba (Katie), but you dissapeared shortly after and I haven't seen you for the rest of the night.
Then I think it was Natalie (INTRANCE), and I hope to god I'm not confusing you with your sis, but I don't think I've ever met your sis, so I'm safe. Anyway, awesome seeing you again, how you can keep going at that pace for that long is amazing.
Then I think it was Mahan (m2j), and I just gotta say, ABOUT FUCKING TIME we met. It's funny how we think alike on so many things, like rank 1's set.
Remember meeting Goodnet too. We chatted for a while, but for God's sake man, speak up!
And then by pure dumb luck I met VIRUS_PW. I was literally shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, that the universe did not implode because two isonewsers met in real life.
Then I remember Sasha dragged me into the middle of TOTAs where I met many of you, Kristina (FunkyGroove), Cribby (Chris? I think... fuck my memory, lol), and others but I can't remember who you were (or maybe I didn't hear - I have a nasty habit of just nodding my head and smiling politely when someone says something I can't hear for the 3rd fucking timel, lol). So yeah, make yourself known if you did meet me, and I'll procede to kick myself in the ass - it's a neat trick, not as cool as Sasha's Flaming Moes, but it holds its own. .
And Jenn! god I'm such a fuckup with the b-day thing. I'm not only gonna flame Fahad 24/7 now, I'm gonna sodomize him the next time I see him. Bring a camera everyone.
JIMMY! Always nice to see you man. Awesome pics btw, lol at the guy changing.
Then when we went outside, I met a whole bunch of you. Sean Cassidy, an English teacher?, EvilTree. And Mako and Legendary_Waz.
In conclusion, Yoji > Ornadel > Rank 1.
On of the most fun nights of my life, evidenced by the fact that I've been smiling ever since I came into the KH, and I still can't stop.
