So Im wrong, but than again, they didnt need as much oil in the 70s since there werent as many cars around as there are now.

Well Jr. is just an idiot for going to war for the pride of his father, who understood the implications of going in there which is why he didnt go on further with Desert Storm - but Bush being the monkey looking idiot he is, decided to go in on a whim. Again, Im not against going in there, Im against how he did it - Its just very sloppy work.

I just wanted to say that the levels of stupidity on both sides of the arguments in this thread amaze me. It's this black/white view that most of you have that is the main problem.

Oh, and sandstorm, we import less now than we did in some of the years you put up, and even in the graphs you posted, that's less than 10% (more like 7%) of our usage. Recent stats for Jan. 2005- Oct. 2006 - http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/...ent/import.html. We get more than twice as much oil from people like Hugo Chavez in Venezuela, who also hates us. The military staging grounds and alliances in that area are more valuable in the long run than the oil.

Just as a throwout question which I have my own personal thoughts on, but would like to see what those of you who are on the "we're only there for oil" side of things think: Would more of you be happier if the Middle East had nothing to offer the West (i.e. oil) and ended up in the sort of ignored turmoil that goes on in Africa?

i'm not really in the realm of "it's all for oil", i know that's not true, but i guess i'll address your question.... iraq is so much different than the situations in africa... most of the middle eastern conflicts are in such a different boat than what's going on in sudan, for example.... what's going on in sudan is a crisis.... it's beyond turmoil, it's a humanity crisis... if we hadn't put our hands in iraq, there wouldn't be turmoil in the first place, and as crazy as it is now, it's not even a humanity crisis as much as the africa situation is (aids, genocide, etc.)... we will never find out, for at least a decade or two, exactly why we were in there (or what drove cheney to write articles about iraqi occupation, years before the fact)

I think were there for a couple of reasons. We were aware of Iran, taking control of Iraq gives us a good piece of the puzzle. We could careless about Iraq, we just want to have some extra umph since Israel is having its own shit storm. Israel loosing control between Lebannon and the Palestinians, coupled with Sharon's illness is a reason why we are there. The strength of Israel there gave us a big chip in the middle east, since it lost some flare we needed to step in. Once the US gets what its wants out of the middle east, they will probably abandon Israel cause they wont have use for it.

Cause not everyone had open arms. But... a statement like that... doesnt it mean they were foreshadowing something? Which means there was time to prepare.

It's not about oil

Sorry, mistook what you were saying since you were saying when you quoted Vlad, especially since a lot of people still think we are there just for oil. If this were an oil driven war, we could have selected a few other countries. For example, a war with Saudi Arabia, where many of the 9/11 hijackers were from, would have been just as easy to sell to the American people. Hell, we could have just thrown a huge PR campaign to have the Mexicans overthrow their government since so many of them seem to want to live here that we could have just taken their country on as new states

it's not foreshadowing anything haha it's showing that even the government didn't think there would be so much violence as there was, dude.... the turmoil that ensued shocked them as much as the people living in the country and affected by it
