I agree. Especially with the "sometimes always" part.

But seriously, I know lots of people whom I would say came from fucked up parents. Some of my best friends had terrible mothers and fathers, but dealing with that shit as children did not hurt their character - if anything, it has made them stronger.

Am I saying that we should let idiots have kids or that we should just let people do whatever they feel like doing all of the time? Of course not. But as it's been stated in this thread before, what are you really going to do about it? You can't stop people from having children and you can't ever entitle people to a perfect quality of living - you can try, and perhaps this effort is really the source of what goodness really exists in this world. The children may be our future, but a future unchallenged by the adversity of parental character flaws is an unprecedented one. Of course there is a line between physical/mental abuse and just plain 'bad parenting', but like I said, just because people have idiots for parents doesn't necessarily make them stupid, even if it sure seems to greatly enhance the odds.

i hate to state the obvious but not all parents are bad, i say this because i AM a parent now and i agree with alot of what ANF is saying. I just feel a little defensive because i am 24 with a baby and i quit my career because i was lucky enough to be in a position where my husband makes enough money for me to stay at home and raise our kid. So that being said, i would do anything for my girl, i'm with her all the time. I rarely go out, i quit drinking and smoking (which isn't always necessary) and do EVERYTHING i can to make sure that she is getting what she needs physically and emotionally. I think i am a damn good mum and it makes me sick to hear about negligent parents and those that just don't care. But please, don't give up on all of us.. this world hasn't gone completely to shit.. not yet anyway.

if only todays parents had some dedication like you do.The ones who go out and take pills while their child is in bed should have a court order for mandatory tube tying.

I know a girl like this. If it werent for her mother (childs grandma) the child would be an orphan. And the father, who knows where that loser is. And i agree with mandatory tube tying with scum like this.

I am a little irritated by these "mandatory tube tying" comments, and the assumption that it is only the mother who is the shitty parent.

Where are the fathers? Are they even in the picture? Shouldn't they be forced to get mandatory vasectomies?

It takes two people to make a baby. It is VERY convenient for the male gender that it is the woman who has to do all the work in birthing the child, and then usually has all of the responsibility dumped on her lap. The fathers should be around helping and contributing just as much as the mother is, and if they aren't - they are just as bad, if not worse of a parent, and deserve equal or more severe punishment.
