Not everyone plays predictable 64 beat intro mctrance like you do, in which case phrasing becomes a matter of knowing your tracks well and predicting which percussion and melody lines are going to sound good or bad over the top of one another as elements are added and subtracted.

"phrasing" ...it's an added bonus as far as I'm concerned.. sticking to the 4/4 music progression is a must but the 'phrasing' isn't essential.. it's kind of expected tho over time I reckon..

I think it's important but i truly belive a set has to have some progression/direction more importantly.

The worlds best phrasing won't stop a set becomming boring or repetitive imo.

yeah agreed.. I think the most important parts of mixing are track selection, progression and mixing ... optional extras that are kinds expected but not essential i reckon are phrasing, tricks, key mixing, etc..

I'm all for phrasing at the right time in the right sets but sometimes I don't bother with that

most dance music is "predictable 64 beat intro" of one sort or another. certainly anyone a fan of the style of music that they're willing to play to a crowd should have it covered, i dont care if its weird 3/4 time with a lemon twist. phrasing in almost any form of music is a piece of cake and should be considered as mandatory as beatmatching when we're talking about DJing.

EQing is just as mandatory as beatmatching, but it's still something that some people can just do far better than others.

In my opinion phrasing and harmonic mixing are in the same boat; easy to do, hard to do well.

harmonic mixing is only useful in long ass sets.. for most djs who play 1 or 2 hours they want to be as diverse as they can and not take people on some musical rollercoaster.. if you're doing a shit job and you want to mix in a track you think will get people moving who gives a fuck what key it is in.. you can cleverly mix it in without combining the basslines for both tracks

IMO knowing how to insert the pink elephant into the blue gumboot is the most important part of DJ'ing!

agreed. but knowing that youre about to do an out of key mix can help you plan your phrasing and EQing at least, that's how i look at it. i dont pretend to be very skillful, and ill take all the help i can get

imo, (in trance at least) nothing sounds quite as good as that subtle shift in bassline and energy you get from a nice harmonic mix

haha but MY opinion and i KNOW this is what James really meant, is that Key mixing is essential!

beat matching is one thing, but if u cant key match then the mix will just sound " meh " and changes it from being just good to " fuckin mad "
